The best Lynch site I have ever seen... The Black Lodge:

http://lynch.batbad.com/

You can get lost in it for hours. Change the channels on
the tv for different "worlds"...

alphabet is cool. it's kinda hard to explain to someone who
hasn't seen it.
all the short films are weird...

my favs are "lumiere" and "cowboy & the frenchman"

Wasn't it Lynch who recently did a miniseries about some
people dressed as rabbits? What was that all about?

offline tibbar from harrisburg, pa (United States) on 2003-10-18 03:23 [#00906379]
Points: 10513 Status: Lurker

no, i didnt mean the deeper meaning... i think its just
based on a nightmare, like he says in the intro on the dvd.

i meant more what happens in it and how its part animated,
etc...

"rabbits" was the title... and yes, that was him. the 3 main
stars were the 2 chicks from mullholland and the director
guy form mullholland (ill keep character names out of it to
keep it basic) ;)

it was kinda weak. i see what he was getting at, but it was
kinda boring.

same with that "dumbland" cartoon he was doing.

his site in general is beat.
deefinitely not worth te crazy membership fees.

tibbar: What was he getting at? Rabbits still alludes me...

from what i could surmise, he was trying to paint a picture
of entrapment.

kind of like watership down, he used these mild animal
characters (completely silent and almost motionless) to
demonstrate the violence of the world outside of that
apartment. the loud train sounds, the clanging factory below
the tenement... he basically was trying to paint these
characters as being singular and alone.

kinda the whole "dont go out there! you dont know whats out
there!" thing.

the point being, if you let fear control you (particularly
fear of the unknown), you will never know freedom.

i like the idea, i just dont think it makes for a good
serial short film type thing.

i dont know... i just found myself looking at my watch too
often when trying to view the episodes.

and they were all kind of the same thing.

offline MrGerbik from United States on 2003-10-18 03:32 [#00906395]

Hmm... any thoughts on some of the more specific bits, such
as characters disappearing at the door, or when the room
goes red and that jabba the hut sounding thing starts up?

I love picking apart the details (though the "step back and
view as a whole" thing is always the most important with his
stuff I think.. that usually needs to be done prior to
dissecting the specific moments).

had to do a lot of that with Mulholland Drive. Watched it
about four times thinking about the clues Lynch gave on the
DVD before getting a vague idea about what the fuck was
going on.

Still haven't really grasped it tho.

i think the vanishing thing was more just a visual to
represent how limited their view outside that world was.
kinda of like being EXTREMELY near-sighted. you get blurry
being just 3 feet away.

the room going red...
well, if we look at other lynch films, we know he uses like
colors for like ideas. it's something that seems to be VERY
deliberate. red has always seemed to mean fire or something
supernatural in his films. some veil of reality that is like
the curtains in the red room keeping us out. with that in
mind, i surmise that in the case of the "rabbits" shorts, it
represents a closeness or urgency of what is outside that
door trying to press in on them. the clostrophobia of
"knowing" that the doom outside is utterly certain and
immediate. i think the "jabba the hut sounds" have something
to do with that. the factory elements sounding almost alive,
like something trying to swallow them up.

mulholland i could disect for at least an hour. sometimes i
think i really should write a nice essay outlining that
thing for people.

it's SUCH a good film.

im sure when his next one comes out, ill be as stunned and
clueless as the general masses, but i usually am able to do
detective works to piece it together.

tibbar: I wrote an essay of MD a while back... don't know
where the hell I left it =/ On a board somewhere I'm
sure...

More so than most of Lynch's films, that one I feel is put
together SO perfectly... after the first 2 or 3 viewings
(once I began to really feel it) the "detective work" was
the serious payoff... rewatching bits and connecting the
dots in Diane's head... mmm thats good stuff :)

hell yes, i think he's gotten better and better with age.

i imagine he'll always be my favorite director of all time.

him and wes anderson. hehe.

and i also agree that that plot is SO fricken tightly
written, theres literally almost zero gap for error or loose
ends.

tibbar, here's something I'm sure you would appreciate... I
worked with a woman a couple years ago (a costumer named Amy
Stofsky) and we became good friends. Maybe 2 months after
meeting Amy, I come to find out she was the head costumer on
Blue Velvet, FWWM, and the pilot shoot of MD :) I was blown
away. She showed me her FWWM crew jacket and lent me 2 full
photo albums of set polaroids she had saved from the Blue
Velvet shoot. She's got some great stories.

I plan to get ahold of thoe polaroids again and scan them :P

She even has polaroids of scenes that were cut from the
movie... I remember one specifically from the extended
Johnnie Farragut death scene (where they have sex with the
headless corpse).
