when your using a dial up modem it dial the number then you get a screeching noise can anybody tell me what the noise is? |

the noise is testing certain speeds between the host and your client. Thus, as the noises are going off, it is actually testing the max speed to reliably talk at. |

that screeth noise is your pc talking with the server you're trying to dial into, saying "here is ma username and password, will you let me in?" the server checks and accordingly validates the data and establishes a connection. because we are talking analogue data exchange over usually more than 5km of cable, select frequencies are chosen to communicate on, they happen to be frequencies we can hear, which is exactly what you're hearing. on DSL, in principle the same thing occurs, except on frequencies outside our aural awareness spectrum. plus it's digital, less error, security for another......things like that |

The noise is basically the digital information from your computer turned into an analogue waveform for transmission over the phone system. It is a handshake then the authentication. Even once you have connected those sounds are still going on, just the modem stops outputting them through its speaker. Like old cassette based computer systems, they made a similar noise. |
