Hey everyone, been a while since I was on here

I was hoping that you guys could help my girlfriend and I
out.

She's studying Music Technology at college, and there's an
assignment on taking two genres of music and finding out
their origins and cultural links.

Could any of you guys give us some reference material
(viewable on the net) on the origins and cultural links of
IDM/Braindance

You know, stuff like who were the initial pioneers, etc etc
etc.

We'd really appreciate any help that you can give us.

We know that xltronic.com is the knowledge
base for all stuff like this :)

Thanks everyone.

go to allmusic.com
derrick may
juan atkins
kraftwerk
staukhausen
there should be a section specifically on IDM and electronic
music in general

hyperreal.org has been around a long time and probably has
a lot of interesting information - especially in some of the
mailing list archives (where you'll find the coining of the
term we all love - IDM).

Public enemy fit anywhere? Lets not forget that this shit is
just as much Hip hop as it is electronic music.

Folk begat blues begat jazz begat rock begat pop begat
techno begat electronic begat IDM.

I always thought IDM was a subgenre.

THanks everyone for all your help, we've got together some
great research material - my girlfriends tutor is gonna have
a few days of reading to go through before he can give her
an A+ for it
;)

Apparently everyone else in the class handed in only two
sheets (without research), so we're hoping she'll get top
marks.

Once again, thanks everyone :)

detroit Techno too...

This ought to help you no end:

This Braindance shit is the bastard child of EVERY type of
music EVER...don't try to search it roots because you would
be searching for ever...

The same could be said about every form of music.

There really isn't anything unique about IDM, cept that the
artists get to get away with a lot more.

I never said IDM...I said Braindance.

Same music. Different name. There are enough sub genres
within sub-genres. Everytime someone talks about glitch,
braindance, microsound, dsp, etc... theys talking about IDM.
The name braindance is just Mr. James pistake on the name
IDM.

offline ecnadniarb on 2003-10-09 17:00 [#00896409]

No, Braindance is Braindance...it covers every type of
music. IDM covers elitest bullshit music that is mostly
dull and uninteresting.

i listen to electronica, that sub-genre naming shit
IS the elitism. why cant you guys just agree that it
sounds good no matter what funky name you come up with for
it. Its electonic music, hence electronica, 'nuff said.
