How 'Big' are Cell pone ring tones in the US?

In the UK Cell phone/ring tones outsold 'singles sales.

At the moment, some major record companies are encouraging
people to compose ring tones as opposed to 60 minute
albums.

Is this good if you have to use a GM pallete to force
creativity or....do you need to wait for sample based
tunes..... or would you prefer to download an
idea..........or would you prefer to buy a track?

i just assumed they were all pirated. i didn't learn until a
few weeks ago that they weren't free. people here love their
ringtones.

as far as making music for cell phones, there's some decent
music made on Gameboy programs. it's good for a novelty but
i'm sure it grows old for the artist. i'd never buy anything
that was made for a cellphone and if i downloaded it i'd
probably listen twice and never again.

unfortunately they are big and ANNOYING as hell. i hate some
ring tones from the first note. i have my cell on vibrate
all the time as it's a work requirement....however even off
work i keep it that way.

cell phones are annoying enough without annoying Beethoven
tones ringing in a weird key and ruining the song for
me......i actually heard a country song on one the other day
and i nearly dropped some coffee on the person accidently on
purpose j/k.....anyway i hate the sound of ringing
phones....it makes me think of telemarkers...the BANE of my
existance....meh

Warp are asking for new compositions........

I'd like a fun ring tone if I ever answered my phone, but
the kids love silly mellodies.

ringtones are big in the Netherlands too.

sadly. we have whole commercials (thankfully only in the
middle of the night), showcasing ringtone after ringtone.
yes a whole tv programme filled with annoying tinny
ringtones. ugh.

on the other hand, you have an electronic piece called
"dialtones", composed completely out of ringtones and
general phone sounds.

I have the cd - it's pretty amazing.

it came out on Staalplaat - clicktone!

My cell phone is 'off' all the time. I only use it if I'd
like to contact someone. You know what kids are like....
it's fun if you're down with a certain thing. Recording
companies are 'on it' NOW! finding the next ringtone hit..

i think ringtones are big in every 1st world country..
they're appreciated but for non-cellphone addicts they're no
big deal (or sometimes like lecoeur said really annoying). i
bet warp would do a good job at making some ringtones but
really i'd much rather they concentrate on that spectral
musicians cunningham DVD or a new compilation album.

i guess if there is money to be made, go for it.....but as
for me i'd pay for QUIET damnit.....i use my phone as a
necessity.....not a crutch like some peepz.

on a bus ride from BWI to DC a guy called everyone on his
list cos he was bored.....only problem was i had to listen
to the same boring story about 15 times. why do people feel
the need to call people every second of their lives....like
they can't stand peace and quiet for 30 minutes.....don't
they realize how annoying it is for strangers to have to
listen to mindless chit chat......uughghhgh

i have a love/hate relationship with my cell phone......as
you can see

one of my teachers made an interesting point about the
popularity of mobile phones - one of the consequences is
that the line between public space and private space blurs.
you can hear the most private conversations being held,
while standing in a crowded bus.

weird.

what if warp became famous because of their ringtones. and
they were mentioned like this- "warp, the leader in
ringtones. a company that started out with small techno
acts..."

it's so true. i always listen in on people's calls when they
pass by or start chatting on their phone when i'm nearby.
they have it coming. usually it's totally boring and innane
but sometimes there're some funny bits. it's mindboggling
some of the things people will speak in public so long as
it's "on the phone."

I'd send it now but it's in four parts...... it'll take me
an hour to compile it..... I'll write it down now, you'll
have it tomorrow. It's a pure demo so don't start giving
your opinion yet!

tomorrow....

i totally agree.....i've heard some SERIOUS shite on peoples
PRIVATE calls.....cos they are talking loud enough for
everyone to hear.

sometimes i just stare in the hopes that they'll realize
that people can hear them talking about cheating, their
son's bedwetting, etc.....i mean really....these things
should not be talked about in a crowded airport in front of
lots of people who would rather not hear about your personal
and private ordeals.....i'm totally floored
sometimes.....people really have forgotten what it means to
be polite!

grrrrrrrrr

My phone says "This is going to make you freak
duhduh"...only problem is I have started answering it doing
the "duh du doo duh du du du" it's like an auto reaction.

My phone is cool...WAV ringtones, gameboy and NES emulator
and just just upload pictures and things for wallpaper...all
free and lovely :D

someone else viewing the proprety today and I can feel it's
going to be a bidding war! It's an amazing house but I'm
going to out bid them 'till I'm bankrupt. the Bastards!

Golf is good for calming the nerves, I haven't played for 7
years.

I like the good ringtones that are quality midi, but the
shitty ones that are one note at a time in 8-bit mono are
TERRIBLE, anyone that has those should be shot.
