If you think positive about everything, then everything is
great, so life is great, and great lives are enjoyable

I think having an attitude to "have a go" at everything is
important too

I know some elite athletes visualize themselves succeeding,
as a part of their training. It's a sort of a meditation,
where you see yourself winning/scoring whatever.

that's it.

offline disasemble from United States on 2003-10-07 12:24 [#00893198]

completely positive thinking is just like completely
negative thinking. its just extremes.

i think people who focus on either one completely are
fooling themselves. not a day goes by without me feeling
positive and negative. most of the time its just somewhere
inbetween.

WELP, thats my take on it anyhow.

I agree. I prefer to take things the way they are and that's
that. I have no need to be thinking constantly possitive
thoughts about my life and what happens in it.

offline goDel from ɐpʎǝx (Seychelles) on 2003-10-07 12:37 [#00893218]

yes, how you perceive/interpret the world, how you
(accordingly) interact with that world, how people
(accordingly) perceive/interpret you and we're back to the
start again.
so in essence, i think there's more to it than only
perception (or interpretation). its the interaction part
that makes the difference.

Well positive thinking can cure people of cancer and
negative thinking can cause almost any congestive illness:
heart disease, cancer, etc...

The Placebo effect is obviously a good example of positive
thinking - And there have been cases at the other end of the
spectrum where someone's been mis-diagnosed with a serious
illness and actually ended up dying from it! It's actually
more common than you'd think.

The human body's actually incredibly well designed to repair
itself, even destroy giant tumours - But it's just something
that modern westernized man doesn't pay much attention to on
the whole - Rulers in ancient Egypt used to live to 80+
quite frequently - And that's without anti-biotics or
anything.

offline J Swift from United Kingdom on 2003-10-07 14:12 [#00893352]
Points: 650 Status: Regular

In fact, some people have even said that over 90% of all
illness may be originally caused by negative
thinking/repressed emotion - It certainly has a lot to do
with cancer and heart problems... Also, laughter stimulates
the immune system while stress and depression drastically
weaken it - Which leaves you open to all illnesses and
cancers.

The same importance should be attached to positive thinking
as to healthy eating and exercise.

Escape for the weak or a weak escape but positive thinking
can also be an advantage. In the way of managing situations
or even to avoid a mindflood created by a small problem for
example.

Perception is the point, but efficacity can depend of it.

Religious/spiritual people (obviously not meaning your
stereotypical fundamentalists or evalgelist types!) tend to
live much longer than atheists.
It's been proven in just about every culture on earth...
Much lower risks of heart problems or cancers, and much more
healthy immune system... Shows how closely the mind and body
are related.

Even to the extent of: if you imagine yourself workin out at
a gym you will get around 50% of the benefits as if you were
actually there! No shit! I promise you!

You see generally around 50% growth in muscle fibres
(compaired with doing it for real) and also improved
circulation and aerobic efficency!

And if you are working out or trainning in sports, your
perception of what you're doing and how it will affect you
actually have a profound impact on your physical
development.

depends what one means by +ve thinking .. if its the type C,
repressing your anger etc. and putting on a happy face, i
don't think that's really that healthy in the long term. but
if its a positive attitude towards attaining goals etc. i
don't see how that can be a bad thing? (and yeah, that
cancer therapy stuff is pretty mean things)

offline korben dallas from nz on 2003-10-07 16:30 [#00893501]

i think the tricky part though is buying into it. the
placebo effect works for the supersitious, but puts off
those more alienated ... ideally there would be a middle
ground that combines both approaches - ie. you know its a
placebo and don't share the superstitious ignorance, but at
the same time you still buy into it/play along genuinely

Multiplicative thinking is much more powerful than positive
thinking but you need multiple brains, or enhanced neurons.

I think there's a fine line between positivity and naivety.
Sometimes it pays not to get your hopes up too much, which
is perhaps more realistic than negative, instead of being
overly positive.

what is a person but the consequences of their beliefs? if
you know that you choose how you react, and take
responsibility for this, then you can determine why you
react as you do, then change how you react, according to
whether your reaction is helpful to yourself and others.
it's useless to try to cover up negative thoughts with
positive ones; but if you identify the beliefs that produce
the negative thoughts, then you can change the belief, and
then initiate the appropriate positive thought.

of course, the power of positive thinking is not important
to anyone until they discover how important it is...

really have a good one.

offline pachi from yo momma (United States) on 2003-10-08 00:24 [#00893929]

i've had to discipline myself to have a good attitude.
sometimes i'd just sit in my bedroom for a while and
meditate. my experience in martial arts (taekwondo) was
actually a spiritual benefit for me as well. i usually
insist on being nothing short of rational most of the time
so as to maintain a positive attitude. it's working for me
so far, but it's been said that those who are too rational
don't live as long as those who freely express their
emotions. still, i've insisted that giving up is like hara
kiri.

hmm, I'd think exercise, diet AND positive thinking,
together is more powerful. I mean you can't be fully
fulfilled with just positive thinking. Being healthy and
happy atleast to me encompasses all those things, and is
more powerful. certain beliefs etc can change the way you
think and feel, it's pretty easy to do. but making it last
is the hard part (depends of course how badly you want it).
nothing is a problem, it's just a challenge. That's pretty
powerful thinking already and gets me through nearly
everything. i tend to think everytime i'm feeling negative
or down to be just a challenge, and then start looking for
ways to get back up again - otherwise you lose control. it
could be just as simple as changing the way i'm looking at
something or going to the gym and sweating it out. of course
this is just my point of view, it's probably different for
everyone else. but i just thought i'd add something.

Anyway, you can think positively all you like. Action is
when anything changes for real.

offline J Swift from United Kingdom on 2003-10-08 13:35 [#00894802]

Oh yeah! Exercise is definetly the key to thinking
positively!
And self-hypnosis works wonders too - I've just started that
myself - Results are shockingly noticeable!
Martial arts is prolly one of the best things you can do -
It's really a form of standing meditation - When you're
concentrateing on your body movements for like a solid hour
or two you're actually completey clearing your mind.

offline bjg from Adelaide (Australia) on 2003-10-08 13:49 [#00894834]
Points: 203 Status: Regular

Yep, you need both definetely. Positive thinking may help
cure disease etc, but exercise and diet can definetely help
with positive thinking - and both can do wonders. If you sit
at your computer all day eating and slouched over (speaking
from experience here as i used to do), you'll find it pretty
hard to think positive. Well you can think positve, but it's
definetely nothing on what you can feel and think if you
work on all aspects. It's all interrelated. Emotions don't
just "exist", they are caused and are apart of your physical
makeup.

and damn, i should have kept up with taekwondo!
