i wrote about that in different smojphace threads :) there's a whole lotta difference in the ktpa's and merzbow's stuff imo,
merzbow's noise is just so full and deep, it sucks you in, it consists of different layers, and in a way it even has a calming effect on me, sorta in the same way as ambient (strange maybe, but true).
to me the kpta's were flat, one layered tracks which were like cheap, annoying efforts to copy akita's stuff,
imo of course :D
don't get me wrong, i'm a huge rdj fan, but he must accept that he can't be the master in every electronic genre :P

his best video, by far, is the one for the song that goes "ScreeeeeeeeeeeeBzzzzzzzGHGHGHGgggghhgGHGHGHBOOOOOOOooozzzz zzzzzzzzvvVVVVVV!"
that one rules.

funny you mention this. The fact he doesn't make 'songs', but 'noise', people deserve some attention when they truely love this. I always compare it with nature sounds, which i love, like thunders, the sea and a waterfall... Those are great noises. so assume when you like merzbows sound there's probably some calming effect in it.

i should've also added that i find merzbow's stuff so powerfull and that there's so much energy in it, sorta like the thunder you mentioned :)

thanks for the link, this is the first Merzbow i've listened too and I really like it, could you reccomend what Merzbow cd to start with? He has 100's of cd's, it's impossible for someone new to his music to know what to buy.
He has good taste too, nice Apple Powerbook :)

I can't imagen why you would want to go to a merzbow "live" show. hahah how boring. people just stand there and listen to his grained farts. I honestly don't get this noise "music". I think akita laughes at you guys for buying/downloading his albums.
but of course this is only my oppinion and my oppinion means shit. :D

i didnt like much smojphace either, but i would in no way compare it to merzbow. im sure rdj didnt want to do anything alike merzbow and that is why it sounds different...im pretty sure if he wanted to do a decent noise release he could have done it as i've heard him play some cool noise, so he definitely know how to do that. smojphace was just something totaly diferent.imo.

i never saw merzbow live-i very much want to tho!
but i saw russell haswell live, which is very similar stuff to merzbow and i was totaly enjoying it, with many other people, and there were like 5 other artists playing in other rooms, so if it was that shit, all the people would leave to other rooms...infact just before haswell came on there was some japanese artist playing and it was decent stuff (not noise), but when he finished it got really crowded, so i guess some people enjoy noise...and you'd be surprised how good it sound on big speakers and it actually makes you move...there were also some poeple dancing to it and they seemed to really enjoy that and it didnt looked a bit weird, so go and check one of this artsits if you get a chance, you might be surprised :)

Pantalaimon: Start with either 24 Hours: A Day of Seals or 1930. I'd go with 24 hours, only it's a four disc set, so may be a little overwhelming.

Picked up a Merbow remix CD the other day...great Autechre remix on there & the ever wonderful Panasonic...
oh yeah, a local Arts Centre had a Merzbow 24hr CD concert; playing everything from that Box set...pity I missed it; but fuck knows what mental effect that amount of him would be....

I've seen Merzbow live thrice, and I'ts a lot like stepping into a cathedral, or a moving glacier, or something equally powerfull, it's a transforming experience, maybe a bit like birth really :)....And I totally agree with what your saying about Merzbow's calming effect, Morton!
I very rarely listen to Merzbow at home, because I feel that my sound system isn't up to it. So I actually prefer noise-music live.

I've even met the guy, back when I worked for the Student Radio in Bergen. I was supposed to do an interview, but the language-barrier was kind of difficult to overcome. But I can assure you he's definitely not jerking us off doing his stuff. While his wife - who was also present at this interview and much more skilled at speaking english - also care for more conventional music, Masami is a purist for the noise!

last evening i forced myself to download some merzbow. And really, to me it sounded just like the coded dido-files from kazaa which only had some scratchy IEEE-AA-UUUU noise. i really tried to find some differences between the 'songs', but another frequency aside it was all the same and got boring really quickly. i really respect people who can enjoy this. I always imagine you should be really drunk..hah
I found a waterfall-sample which i looooove now.
