On midi controllers.

It's well documented that mixers' faders need replacing
every now and then (my crossfader wearing out from
scratching on a non scratch mixer has prompted me to get a
proper scratch mixer). However, this seems to only apply to
faders, not "pots" or knobs as they tend to be known as in
electronica.

I've had a phat boy (midi controller) for over a year now
and have used it a lot. I've even used it to control the
crossfader in traktor, which again, I've given an absolute
hammering to. However, aside from the knobs rotating more
freely, there is no noticable messing up of the midi data
being sent. So, my question:

Are knobs on midi controllers generally extremely durable?
Do Sliders on midi controllers suffer from the same problems
as slide faders/crossfaders on mixers?

I understand that as it's digital rather than an audio
signal, it'll moe be a case of one day it'll stop working,
rather than the gradual "loss of quality over time" that I
get with mixer faders wearing out.

(The reason I'm asking is because I'm considering
building/modding a midi controller to be used in conjunction
with ableton live as a substitue for a vestax faderboard.
I've currently set it up so it's perfectly acceptable, apart
from having knobs rather than upfaders...)

i think rotatable potmeters are just more durable than the
things that slide...

I wish I had a mixer...
I want hardware that I can't afford.

Ha ha, tell me about it- the bit of hardware I'm looking to
replace with this system costs £750 and for what it does
there's no way I could justify the price.

He he, my concern is that the midi controller I use to
control the fader in live will wear out :)
