I'm going through a metal period and discovered these via slsk... a bewitching combination of straight-up grindcore and plaintive folksy guitar. Very strange but i think i like em.
I'd be grateful if anyone could recommend where to start with them, or failing that, some more non radio-shite metal for a curious listener?

My girlfriends going through a period and she is really cranky and drunk. I don't know anything about anything you are on about. You should listen to more rap instead of metal.

I really love their first album Orchid. Get the first track on that one, in mist she was standing - it's quite possibly the best metal track ever - it has flavors of vintage Iron Maiden, early Katatonia, My Dying Bride, gives me chills all over....

my brother and cousin saw them on some festival (fields of rock, at which i should have been because !!!MÍNÍSTR?Y!!! was there, fudge), so they liked it, and my cousin bought all their cd's, he's crazy, so that's not of much help, is it.

Aw man the whole album is fantastic, guitar lines that weave together in a dark tapestry, dark and romantic and autumnal.

I like "My Arms Your Hearse" best. Whatever you do, DON'T get "Damnation." It's their newest, it's shit. They got rid of ALL of the metal on it, it's just like soft crappy prog rock.
And it's death metal, not grindcore, but the lines are blurry so whatever.

Blackwater Park is a masterpiece.
Deliverance + Damnation are great too (they were meant to be one double CD, but their label disagreed about it... anyway they're great... Deliverance is more based on the metal side, Damnation is all the "folksy" side and is really beautiful - a masterpiece as well).

Smyrma > just because you don't like it, doesn't mean it's shit. it is different, and not your style, but i love it. and it is not whiny or anything! 'Weakness' is one of the most beautiful/moving endings ever...
(note to everyone interested: at the music for nations website, you can listen to two tracks in streaming... one from their metal side and one from their other side, who are very different... good to get yourself an idea : ))

Ulver is the greatest band from the post black metal era, leaving the folk raw black metal to play ambient electronics nowadays. Bogdan Raczynski made a remix for them.
Arcturus... oh lovely Arcturus, they are avantgarde/cabaret/something in between metal. I heard Garm leave the band to concentrate on his main band: Ulver. The new guy in the vocals is the singer from the prog metal band Spiral Architect.
I think Opeth is in the scene since 1995, deepspace9mm where have beem you all this time? everybody go to the shop and buy their most balanced and mature disc imo, Still Life

The most outstanding metal I've heard for years is The Dynamic Gallery of Thoughts by ...And Oceans. It's positively bipedal. Imagine the spirit and sound of old Emperor, with some Jean Michel Jarre kinda keyboards. They make it work.
Listen to samples - songs 4, 5 and 7 will give you an idea what they're about. Damn.

I only really know their first two - As the Flower Withers and Turn Loose the Swans. After that I started getting more into Tom Waits and jazz and electronic.
I still have those ones - on cassette, ick - with a fucked up bit of tape on 'Swans.

these two sound rather raw, their later albums are much more solid.
their music always had a big emotional impact on me... i used to listen to My Dying Bride a lot before i got into electronic/jazz stuff, but i'm still one of their biggest fans.

My old friend was big on them and other numerous Death Metal, Black Power Metal, etc. etc. goups. Haha, the genre names crack me up. Anyway, I remember they had just released an album with a white CD cover last year that was very mellow and instrumental. It was quite nice actually.
