I would say it has to be pretty well much atonal and really
not really musically at all. I don't really think Aphex
Twin's 'Selected Ambient Works I' is ambient at all.

Anyone know of any good ambient sites? I'm in the mood for
that kinda shit at the mo.

REad some thesis that Eno wrote on the subject, it's
wallpaper music. Similar to lighting of a room, it's a mood
not a statement.

Its funny I really kill for some ambient late a night, which
I know is pretty standard. But there was a time when ambient
was all I listened to but i only really seem to appreciate
late a night and its rare to really be in the mood.

"It was a really beautiful experience, I got the feeling of
icebergs, you know? I would just occasionally hear the
loudest parts of the music, get a little flurry of notes
coming out above the sound of the rain - and then it'd
drift away again..."

good ol' eno, thats one of the best descriptrions of ambient
music i've heard.

i want the CD reissue of Wendy Carlos' "Sonic Seasonings",
possibly the very first ambient record ever, even predating
Brian Eno by years. the CD version has not only the four 20
minute plus "seasons" tracks (which are incredible), but
also two album outtakes and a bonus forty (!) minute song.

most people tend to know Carlos' work from a classical
perspective, but this a couple other releases are true
ambient records.

" music intended to be as easily ignorable as it is
demanding. A minimal form of music based on timbre, texture
and deliberate, somewhat randomly shifting structures."

> this refers more to lowercase music than to ambient to
me...

yeah so much music that is called 'ambient' is not ambient
at all.

ok ok Robert Frip - a blessing of tears is not really
ambient but I think everyone who likes ambient will love
this.

the keyboardist in my band has everything king crimson has
ever done, i will ask him about this...

and alot of people tend to lump other things into ambient
like drone rock, which is more psychedelic, or atmospheric
music, that isn't really music at all...just white noise.

yes, it is.

SAW 85-92 is not, like promo said, except for the song
"I".....

I believe ambient music should be a texture of sounds that
produces beautiful or even dark emotions through the
soundscapes and atmospheres perceived by it.

even if it does have somewhat of a beat,

and promo, i don't think ambient should "not be musically at
all" (?)......

I'm really getting into drones at the moment. People like
Phill Niblock and Keith Fullerton Whitman. Im not too sure
if it'd be called ambient or not.
Its a bit like IDM, theyre both single terms used to cover a
large range of different music.
