took me ages to get into Drukqs

Really took some time for me...can't stand the
"gwarek2"-track ....but i finally (after god knows how long)
see this as an Aphex Twin release next to RDJ-album and the
CTD Ep...

:D

The melody in St Michel (comes in after 2mins something) is
probably the most beautiful Aphex ever wrote. It's stunning!

This reminds me of some of the first posts I made, about
whether you grow to appreciate somethings purely through
familiarity rather than geniunely liking them.

i think that the most beautiful thing from Richie is "On"

I disagree.

On is very good though

Drukqs has its moments but I find is difficult listening. A
very good record definitely but like a lot of records which
I think are more difficult listening like some V Snares and
some Pusher you have to be in the mood. I like these records
but they are more awe inspiring a lot of the time than truly
funky. But I love listening to them if you catch my drift.
There is funk in them its just these kinda records are more
a listening experience than an obvious dancing instant feel
good type one.

Simon Reynolds summed up drukqs perfectly. Loads of good
ideas, but ultimately crap. Not brave enough to commit or
pursue. I'll find a link....

here, but there's more if you search

Drukqs is an essential part of my CD collection. It's simpy
beautiful. The mellow prepared piano tracks complement the
harsh drill-n-bass tracks wonderfully.

I liked it almost immediately.

"Ultimately crap" eh. Well I'd take any of the tracks off it
over 'Freak', mate. Just my opinion, of course.

Did you read the review?

Drukqs is brilliant but It's too schizo, even within a
track I wish it was more brave. Loads of nice ideas but
none of them are bult upon. I can listen to a cool loop for
30 minutes easily.

and it was my real first idm album, the one that made me
discover this place and all the idm style.

I still remember the day I bought Drukqs and listened to
it... it was like total chaos at first, I couldn't make much
sense of it... but I soon realized just how precise and
ordered it is, and it's awesome!

I love 'On' too, but this Michel melody is so sad in a way.
At one point, in the beginning, it just thickens up a bit as
a new layer is added and..it's just OMG!! :)

But then again it was the first Aphex Twin album I bought,
amazing album not such a great starting point though.

better.

Man, I listened to Drukqs about 1000 times back in late '01.
It never left my discman, never left home without it.
Awesome album with a lot of sentimental value for me.

Why are referencing that review like it's the bible, it says
nothing that a thousand critics - or should I say nerds -
didn't say when Druqks came out. It doesn't even sound like
he played it more than twice. It's "too schizo"? I know you
like Snares, why not this? And for a perfect example of a
great idea built upon see the end of Cymru Beats.

maybe he meant schizo in sequencing, ie: acid techno to slow
piano to danny elfman style drums and treated piano etc.

it works for me tho. my radio show pulls the same tricks
with genres so i can relate to what RDJ was doing. but i can
also see how some people would've preferred if it was broken
up by style.

i dont really see much coherence in it. it are like four
styles of tracks randomly mixed up imo: idm, modified piano,
sound experiments and other (like some sort of funky black
shit thats on come to daddy too), oh and normal piano

The general critic response to Drukqs (and most IDM for that
matter) was appalling. They have a right to disagree sure,
but their methods of listening to an album and then putting
out a review stink. I love Drukqs... but with critics and
IDM, as someone has already said, is that if the album
doesn't break some new fantastic ground, they bitch. I mean
just look at those pitchfucks.

yeah, that kinda sucks, too judgementel, it's the problem
with reviews: the writer might not like it. I ofcourse hear
that the combination of the songs is original as well as is
the way aphex made them, but if you dont hear that then it
might be just interpreted as unoriginal. i find good reviews
helpful and interesting though.
