I wouldn't be surprised if they used a similar idea in the series, but I doubt it originated there. Most ideas in TV science fiction can be traced to short stories from the 30s and 40s.
I remember in fact, and mentioned here recently, a story where people paid money to be hooked up permanently to virtual reality machines endlessly playing their favorite fantasies while they stayed alive on life support systems.
Now the plot twist that the machines are farming the humans for their neural electricity is probably unique, and so fucking dumb that none of the classic sci fi writers from the golden era would have come up with it.

That speech by the architect character - did they run some text through a randomizing program or something? It made no sense.
I think the next twist is that "reality" - Zion and the outside world - is also inside the matrix and the whole drama is just to coax a few more millivolts of juice out of the humans. That's why Neo was able to zap the sentinels - he still has his powers because they're still in the matrix.

the architects speech sounds like they had a really simple speech and then just crammed in every word of 4 syllables or more they could think of in there.

Being the big Doctor Who fan I am, I'll fill you in:
The Matrix in Doctor Who refers to a huge databank repository that stores the histories and lives of all the Time Lords (the Doctor's race) on the planet Gallifrey (his homeworld). The Doctor journeyed into the Matrix several times in his adventures, first in 1980 in The Deadly Assassin, where the Doctor entered the matrix by connecting his brain to the computer that drives the matrix... it was repesented as an uber-reality where the doctor's arch-enemy, the Master, controlled reality and seemingly impossible things happened and were possible (sound familiar, eh?). The Doctor went into the Matrix again in 1982 in "The Arc Of Infinity" where the Doctor was trapped in the matrix by Omega, the greatest Time Lord who ever lived. He entered one last time in 1986 in "The Ultimate Foe" (part four of the Trial Of A Time Lord mini-series) and battled the distillation of his darker side, the Valleyard, for control of the Matrix and his remaining regenerations.
Funny, I never looked at The Matrix movies in that context - I suppose they could have copied Doctor Who, but most likely it's a coincodence.

Sorry, I gotta give it to Dr. Who, seeing as how one of my favourite comedic authors of all time, Douglas Adam, made his name with that classic show.

I actually thought about a duel layered matrix as well Fleet Mouse, but if they go and do that, alot of people are gonna get confused because the general population probably cant comprehend that.
