The Rite

We held her hand as she slow submerged,
releasing her to the water green.
We watched her sink into the darkness,
becoming daughter life unseen.

We turned away with bodies weary,
walked from the ancient river's edge.
We threshed our corn and sank our hope
into the rite of yielding flesh.

We danced that night with debauches wild,
escaping thought and guilt of death.
We greeted dawn with tired limbs,
and tilled our fields with tired breath.
