i have the er1 and the ea1. funny little machines they are.
if the es1 is anything like these, and you tweak it the
right way it can come out with some extremely interesting
sounds. the programming for it is very limited though.

how so? the programming part....

like something that frustated me was that you cant program a
drum roll in 4th notes, only way you can do it is with a
fast delay. and with the ea1 you can only play 1 note at a
time. it may be a lot different with the es1 though. that
came out a year after these did or something likr that

So it can.

i'm not sure what you meant by the drum roll in 4th notes,
but i hope it doesn't mean that the step sequencer is really
low. i read that it's 64 steps per part, which i hope is
true. this way you could do the aphex-ish buzzes or really
fast sounds in a row. well, looks like i'll just have to
wait and see. thanks wakisan. :)

You mean 16th note drumrolls? A 4th note (or quarter note)
is only 4 notes a beat, like a bassdrum in 4/4 time.

oh yeah, forgive me i never learned how to read music. like
all those fast rolls that aphex does, cant do that on the er
or ea1's

there is a roll function on the es-1

theres also the ability to double the step notation

and a swing function, which makes things real interesting

a neat trick regarding the roll

while you have that activated on a sample you can turn the
bpm sync on the delay, then wind the tempo, and get all
sorts of growls :)

so rockenjohnny, what's the shortest note length you can do
in the es-1?

i checked out the track. it was nice, kind of reminded me of
track 9 off draft, which i can't remember the title of right
now.

Electribes look like fun, but i never actually used em
before.

the one i'd most likely go for is the...oh wait, that's the
thread title. but yeah, ES-1 would be my top pick.

youve got 4 bars of 16. thats all at base

you can switch it to double that, and retain the old tempo..
but just the once i think. that makes it 1/32

the tempo itself can go up to 300bpm

the roll function has 4 settings.. they range from the
bouncing you can hear in that sample to a fast one that
fills right in a gap between two steps

well that's kind of dissapointing. i was hoping for 1/64 at
least, but 1/32 isn't all that bad. i'm sure i can still
have fun with it. thanks rockenjohnny. :)

no worries. i can say that if you plug a midi sequencer into
it then the problems are solved :)

i'm looking to add this green box cause i saw on the e bay
some battery mods. perfect solution for nature music making
with that audio in option....

can you tell me ehat else you can't dowith it?
more precise part limitations in polyphony infp please!

you can only have a bank of 9 samples from a memory of up to
64 loaded simultaneously - but you can switch between
different banks without a delay. using this thing is all
trickery. very much a live instrument :)

that memory block of 64 samples takes up one of 8 4mb slots
on a 32mb smart card. changing between these blocks seems to
take forever.

it would however be fantastic with a battery mod. id love to
have one of those, i could walk around with a mic making
'nature' songs all day :D

I have the Er1 Ea1 and Es1

The Es is my favourite by far. Delete the factory noises,
get a few clicks and bleeps in there, then start makin
beats. Its great for playing out live aswell, muting and
solo-ing sounds.

The only downsides to it are....

-the sample rate is 32khz (not really a problem) inaudible
difference to most people + you are probably into lo-fi
sounds anyway

-the effects routing is limited, individual sends but only
one effect per patterns, on the other hand it is a cheap
unit and the effects sound pretty good.

-when you upgrade the memory and wack a smart media card in
the back, you are still limited to 4 meg of sample time
(about 90 seconds i think). You have to recall each bank of
4mb seperately. It is a pain in the arse.

Still, I highly recomend this unit, especially if you use it
in conjunction with the er1 in a live setup.

Who needs laptops eh?

i traded both my Er1 Ea1 in for a novation A Station. found
the whole programming thing pretty limitting, so only really
programmed it through midi and fruityloops.

decent sounds through. the Es1 is meant to be the best of
the lot.

The es-1 is defiantly the most user friendly sampler out
there. Korg is pretty darned good at taking the "Work" out
of music making. My akais are a bitch to prog but my korgs
are made in the shade. The media is what turns me off about
the es-1. I hate the little card things, but thats just
Oxygenfad.
