SAW II Beef

why do people go on about SAWII like its the only
ambient/soundscape album ever made? saw2 is good but
methinks the likes of Eno is far more developed in the field
of ambience. do people actually listen to this album cos
they like it or just because its AFX..........?

:-/

well, people might not really like ambient music, but buy
saw2 say, just cos its aphex, and think this is boring n
shit with not much going on etc...

catch me drift?

AFX is for us what Britney is for your niece.

i listen to it because it is good. simple. i like brian eno
as well, but i don't listen to eno as much cos my vinyl is
old and crackly and you cannot get the detail of the sound
properly.

heh, cool. i just think some people tend to blindly follow
artists tho and buy whatever they put out. look at how many
bought smojphace and then slated it...

tied only by come to daddy

i didn't buy smojphace. i like aphex, but i'm not stupid
enough to try and get something out of the garbled mess
thats on that record. i have listened to it for about ten
seconds per track, that was more than enough.......

yeah... afx is my first electronica love so it'll always be
special, but

i put smojphace track one on a compilation cd with prefuse,
µ-ziq, boc, etc etc and it's easily the worst track...

lol you said the forbidden word (eno) we're supposed to
pretend he didn't exist so we can praise aphex and autechre
for their ambient traxxx

anyway, i love SAW2 not just cos of the beautiful ambience
but cos it's totally insane.

To me, SAW II is the "odd man out" of Aphex's output. It's
just so different from his other work. While ambient at
that time was going epic (The Orb as the de facto example),
RDJ tore that all up and produced an album so barely
concious of itself and its listeners. It was a hell of a
statement at the time: The packaging and the hype around it
was to the moon and back, but the actual contents were
completely opposite of all that, subverted and totally
inside itself.

To me, it's one of Aphex's great statements on how he
thought music should and could be, for its own sake. THAT,
besides some truly superb musical moments, is what make that
album a classic in my eyes.

I think ambient has just gone out of fashion. Its a shame
because I was a massive ambient head. I hated anything with
beats when I first started listening to electronic music.
Ambient for me was king but the whole ambient scene has
really folded. At one time it was the cool thing to be doing
and the more minimal the better. I wouldn't be able to tell
between good chill and bad chill these days. Ambient
governed my buying habits for a long time though.

i doubt "selected ambient works vol. 2" is "selected" at
all. it seems very put-together-quickly. i dont find this to
be a bad thing as it means whoever made it was inspired to
do so. however i'm not a huge fan of ambient just cause i
like hearing all the technical stuff

i dig, mainly cuz i dig AFX everything, so this is just
another part of that, but it is a sweet landscape.

this isn't an "eno" board either, so I think that is part of

u gotta REALLY be in the mood for it.. it doesnt happen
often.. i barely listen to it.. but when i do i love it..
its sublime! its likethe fact that ppl might not have any
eno albums doesnt make sawII any less good..

maybe some people buy it cos its afx twin and think wtf is
this? maybe some buy it cos its afx and think.. wow this is
a bit minimilist but i kinda like it! maybe ill investigate
more minimal ambient shit.. it may actually encourage ppl
who would never have considered listening to brian enos
music into giving it a whirl.

to me it sounds like a musical interpretation of feng shui;
everything in its right place and throw all of the
extraneous crap away

Its interesting music. THe song that catches me the most is
track 8 on disc 1. It must have been the time that i
listened to it, because it always reminds me of that. I love
associating music with certain periods in my life, dont know
if ne1 else ever feels that.

I donno. Less developed, but far less technical and more
emotional that most ambient. And FAR less pretentious.

Brian Eno dripps of pretention.

hmm ok, i know this aint an eno board, and that he's not
electronic music, so i guess he doenst get mentioned often.
i guess i was wondering if peoples tastes accept ambient or
just because electronic artists diversify their talent into
the genre they accept it.

I love SAW2, very unsettling and makes me uncomfortable. I
like Eno too... he's more important to the whole ambient
thing and everything, I just prefer SAW.

My favorite Eno stuff isn't ambient, though...

I always find Eno better when I'm not listening to him. I
appreciate what he does, what he's done, how talented he is
and how influential he's been. And I love some of his
tracks. But a lot I get tired of easily.
SAWII is my favourite Aphex Twin release, though. And not
just because it's Aphex Twin... I got it along with
SAW85-92, and only after I liked those discs did I explore
any of his other work.

not for «ambiant is out of fashion» though, seems pretty

this whole 'eno preceded ae and afx' thing is highly
annoying imo. sure there'll have been many other artists who
did stuff in the same vein as what ae, boc etc do these
days.

there have been many many great writers since the roman
empire who have done great great things in a similar vein as
what many many writers did after that.

the point is, there is no time to check it all out, is
there? why must we go on about musical intertextuality when
we can enjoy present day music just as easily without it?

ah well

yea, and you can enjoy radiohead without being familiar with
the beatles but why should you?

the point is, without eno there would be no electronic
ambient music, for one, so people need to start recognizing
the architects of the artform. next, if people enjoy aphex,
BoC, LFO, Ae, mu-ziq, and any of these other '90s-present
artists who have made ambient, they really should check out
some of eno's classic albums, not only for their ADDITIONAL
enjoyment, but for their better understanding (especially if
you can do a little bit of reading about what ambient's all
about).
