Hey. I've been working with FL for a while now and the one
thing I haven't really bothered with is quantizing.. I gave
it a shot or two and then just thought 'Fuck it'.

Can someone explain what quantization actually is?

It basically move notes into time....

Can make things seema bit lifeless if used too much tho, so
you may wanna Q to just 10% at a time to keep going til it
sounds ok, or use Groove Quantatize which keep things funky
(i.e, not strictly on beat)...

Hope that makes sense...

can be handy for drum programming for MIDI purposes though,
but indeed it makes melodies seem a bit robotic at times.

Agreed....altho in my experience, as long as your Bass Drum
is tight, evertihing else can benefit from at least a tiny
bit of slack...

Especially the Snare on 2 & 4., make em a late and it
reelaxes things & vice-versa.....

Feel/Groove is such a weird Science...Used to love cutting
up breaks etc....

yeah, but with hi-hats on each eighth note, for instance, I
like to have them perfectly in time.

*sighs and remembers the time when I made a lot of MIDI
tunes*

Another way of using quantization is to have the bassline
tight- you can get away with slightly looser drums then.
Makes an interesting change form the tight drums, loose bass
norm.

so is quantization basically a way for a non-human machine
to simulate the effect of human "feel" on musical timing?
