The best softsynths

What are the best, easy to use softsynths around at the
moment. I stress easy to use cos i have no patience and am
pretty rubbish anyway!

Also, as far as programming drum patterns, what's the best
(and easiest) to use software wise. Thanks a plenty!

You'd be hard pressed to find something better than
synth1.

Take one of the default sounds and add some square or random
LFO to the FM, for example. Wild stuff. Great built in
arpeggiator and echo too.

absynth is a pretty damned easy to use softsynth, but it
doesn't have the greatest sounds unless you tweak them
somewhat.. but it's good for a few uses..

the easiest prog for drum patterns for beginners would
probably be FL studio (or fruity loops)....

for drums: Rebirth 2 or Hammerhead :)

can you use synth 1 with step sequencers like FLoops?

or do you need a midi controler?

Sure, as long as your version of fruity supports VSTi
instruments. I think some of the older ones don't.

Synth1 is best if you can use a midi controller or the piano
roll view though - some of the sounds need to be held down
to evolve.

You can always go ctrl-t to use the keyboard as a midi
controller.

What? You plonk the vsti dll in a directory somewhere, let
fruity know about it, load a synth1 channel and start
knobulating.

Like I say you get some of the best effects by turning on
the LFOs and applying them to this or that parameter.

Absynth is very good for pads, excellent for ambient music
and anything that requires a softer edge to the sound. On
the downside- programming patches for it can be rather
hit&miss (in terms of reproducing a sound in your
head)compared to other synths. It also uses a fair whack of
processing power.

FM7 is nice, but again has a particular sound to it- good
for doing retro sounding stuff, but not so good for very
clean, highly produced, more modern sounds.

Vaz Modular is a very tidy modular synth-vastly easier than
Reaktor (which takes quite a while to be able to actually
make good synths- and by that I mean ones on par with the
quality of the ones that ship with it). With a bit of work
you can make pretty much any sound in the "normal" range of
keyboards etc. and it even has some nice patches that
emulate classic synths like the 303, sh-101 etc.

If you are only just getting into synthesis, the TS-404 and
SimSynth are both very good introductions and offer a wide
sound palette. Both are included with Fruityloops. Often
overlooked by people due to the fact they're cheap and
rather plain looking, they can often be used for more
normal, analogue synth emulation type sounds, at a far lower
drain on processing power.

I would say the most versatile "basic" synth is Subtractor.
Whilst being built into Reason, it is possible to use in
other sequencers via rewire. It has a very low CPU drain,
but has a suprisingly professional sounding quality to it.
It is also one of the best for convincing, low CPU emulation
of "real" instruments-
strings, basses, triangles, percussive sounds etc.

i hate subtractor. I think it sounds like some fisher-price
synth you hit with a mallet and it blows bubbles at the same
time.

needed to be. i hate being a fathead. anyways...thanks. i'll
play around with this a bit. see what happens. =]

FINALLY I have converted someone to THE DARK SIDE

Now you need to download some patches here

Some of them are great and some of them suck and all of them
surprised the heck out of me 'cause the default patches
really don't showcase what the little mamajamma can do.

well. i got it to show up in my f-loops...but i still have
no idea how the hell to use it. it just sits there and looks
cute. i promise i'm not just a fucktard. i mean i AM,
but that's not the case here.

Basically everyone is looking for the One True Synth like
it'll make any noise they can imagine - BULLSHIT - what I
want is lots of synths with short learning curves so I can
take a default patch and fuck it into something interesting
and unique, not get out a fucking slide rule and calculate
the Hurpaxulon transformations of an infinite quantum
harmonic series as defined in volumes mcmlxvi-mcmlxvii of
the Ontario Maths Squad Advisory Bulletin.

how the crap do i get it to show up as a channel? i can only
make it come up as an FX plugin...and then it doesn't even
do anything. it just stares at me.

Play a few notes while you knobulate. If you don't have a
midi controller go ctrl-t and use your computer keyboard.

FX channel?! How the fuck did you do that?! Did you have a
Cubase effects plugin directory that you stuck it into?

A lot vst instruments suck the living crap out of the
computer's processing power. AO DKL is my favourite VST
instrument. Very simply drum machine that allows you to put
in your own samples in and alter the volume and pitch. Very
easy to use and very effective. And the 3s sampler is good
too. Allows you to put a up to for samples in it an play it
accross the range of the keyboard. Both don't use up much
CPU.

That's one damn fine synth there fleetmouse - it ought to be

I've been playing around with pro-53 and it's impressive
too. Not the most astoundingly original patches (well it is
a vintage emulator) but the sound quality is superb. It's
one of those synths where as you go lower down it just gets
fatter and eviler.
