We all know that SAW 85-92 is drenched in beautiful beautiful reverb. But does anyone know what type of hardware Mr Twin was using for Reverb?
If so are there any hardware reverb units like the one he used?

"Reverb" was the 1st tword that came to mind when I first heard that album.
Maybe he has a hand built one, you know, spring reverb? or whatever!
That'd make a good lie if Richard was being interviewed ;)

Definetly an Alesis Quadraverb. I used to have one a few years back, sounds nothing like modern reverbs atall (Lexicons or plug-ins) - Autechre used it all over Incunabula aswell - Is a very distinctive sound.
I guess the closest I've found in software is the built-in reverb in Renoise.

Nah you should be able to find one pretty easy... I'd probably look on the Sound on Sound readers ads (www.sospubs.co.uk I think!).
Before '96 it was THE reverb to own if you were an electronic producer - I wish I'd never sold mine! Should be able to find 'em for around £70 now I'd guess....
Midiverbs are good too, just less programmable. Blackdog and FSOL used Midiverbs I remember.

They are not rare. Far from it. If you really need reverb, you'll want it to be as smooth as you can afford. Seriously. You can always program it into a shitty reverb. Once the novelty of funny fx wears out, you sit there and wish you had a smoother one where the tail doesn't stick out in the mix. Cheaper reverbs usually do this.
I've ordered a Lexicon MPX-1, which is a notch up from the good budget fx units. Next step down would be the MPX-550(or 500) or the T.C Electronics M-One XL. Both the MPX-550/500 and M-One sound great. I already have an Alesis Midiverb 4 and the difference isn't that big so..
A good fx unit can work miracles on your sounds.

God damn! I was looking at those prices on the Lexicons, S/H on sospubs and.. £325 for an MPX-1?! I paid like £700 (for a new one)..and £600-something for a PCM-80?! It costs something like £1800-2000 here, new. Not to mention there is no second hand market for those here. I would pick those up right away if I was in the UK.
..faaan! dessa ocker priser i Sverige!

I had an Alesis Microverb that sounded like heaven. Not at all a "professional" clean sound but more deep and...well it sounded a lot like the early SAW verb.

I've heard that SAW I was partly mastered on good old Music Casette! And I guess the sound - and especially the reverb - might have been affected by that. I love the sound on this record!

Yes, I think the casette is a great medium. Does anyone of you music-producing members of this board still use the casette in your production? I'm going to buy a used 4-track Tascam casette studio and I soooo look forward to that!

The cassettes, like most tape, have a nice compression/distortion thing going on and I think that is part of the special sound. If you compress digital too hard, all you get is Autechre.
I have an 8-track Yamaha MT8x. It's for sale too (3000 Swedish Krona). I bought it summer 95 and it's mostly been acting as a mixer. I think I've got 3 cassettes made with it :) Now I've got a Behringer MX2642, 4-bus, so I won't need it anymore.
