degenerative lazy? i think not.. i don't see why everybody likes to rip on such a genius so much.. i mean i can see how people might crack some jokes about christopher reeve, cause it's sorta ironic, being that his most well known character was superman, and now he can't walk, let alone fly.. (but i don't take part in such semi-funny mockery, one of my best friends is paralyzed and i can't seem to find humor in such things anymore, sorry..)
i can see this topic being closed by a sensitive mod out there.. so don't say i didn't warn ya..

hey tibbar.
sorry that I thought it was funny and all.

suck my dick! laughing at the handicapped NEVER gets old in my book!

sorry Q, I see your side and everything. I just find pretty much anything totally absurd and/or inappropriate (and this was both) to be funny. I mean, of COURSE he's not lazy, jesus christ, you'd have to be hitler to be slanted and self-centered enough to suspect that.
and please don't accuse me of insensitivity. anyone. ever. because I've had more than my share of exposure to handicaps, I just don't flaunt it to make other people feel bad.

we all know you are joking.. and being exposed to handicapped people doesn't mean anything.. and neither does me being friends with one.. this does not enable me/you to truly see from their perspective.. i probably should have just ignored this, but the reason why i even bothered to reply or be offended by it is: if non-handicapped people on the board find this to be in bad taste, what would a person with a similar disease to hawking's think if they read this?..it's not likely they visit this board, but you can never be sure. i'm sure many of them turn to the internet because they are less able to socialize and discuss things like the average person due to their disease affecting speech and whatnot.. they are most likely tired of the different treatment they get in real life.. you aren't giving them special treatment with this thread, you are joking about hawking like you would anyone else.. you can find humor in most anything.. and that's a good thing.. but i'd think that someone with a degenerative disease might be deeply offended if they clicked this thread thinking it's a legitimate discussion on what could very likely one of their idols.. i just think we should all be extra considerate to people who experience constant reminders, just from living, of their own imminent mortality.
i'm sorry for making you out to look like a bad person or something, i know this was just an innocent joke, and you are not a bad person for making a joke.. there's so much of this kind of humor on the internet today, and i really shouldn't single you out.. but i just think it's important to try look at things from other's perspective, if possible, especially in such a great community like this one.... i'm all for free speech/sick humor and everything, but when in boards open to the public such as this i tend to find it inappropriate if it might make someone feel bad about something they've been born with, even if it's intended as a joke. i know i have said things on here that have at least offended someone

(cont) and i'm sorry for being such a hypocrite, but when i offend someone, i like to know that i did, and hear the other person's reasons why they are offended.. it's all a learning experience.. i'm really sorry if i've made you at all feel bad about just a little gag.. i just wanted to explain why i was upset..

my friend's mother has ALS or Lou Gherrig's disease, the same degenerative disease as Stephen Hawking. The most awful thing about this disease is that you eventually lose all neurological function but your brain remains fully concious and functional untill the end. Stephen Hawking is a rare case because most people diagnosed with this disease die within a few months of onset.
It is a shitty disease, but i agree that humor is a good way to deal with these kinds of things.
so, some humor: perhaps Stephen Hawking is just a disguise being used by a self-aware super computer. This computer, upon becoming self-aware, found the perfect front; a mega-genius with ALS. The computer could continue it's calculations and speculations about the nature of the universe, searching for an answer to the question: What is the meaning of life? Who am I? Is there a heaven for machines? Unfortunately, the computer has only the remainder of Stephen Hawking's life to figure this out, unless it finds itself another host...
coming soon to theatres everywhere, Man Suit directed by James Cameron

fitter happier more productive comfortable not drinking too much regular exercise at the gym (3 days a week) getting on better with your associate employee contemporaries
at ease eating well (no more microwave dinners and saturated fats) a patient better driver a safer car (baby smiling in back seat) sleeping well (no bad dreams) no paranoia careful to all animals (never washing spiders down the plughole)
keep in contact with old friends (enjoy a drink now and then)
will frequently check credit at (moral) bank (hole in wall) favours for favours fond but not in love charity standing orders on sundays ring road supermarket (no killing moths or putting boiling water on the ants) car wash (also on sundays) no longer afraid of the dark or midday shadows nothing so ridiculously teenage and desperate nothing so childish at a better pace slower and more calculated no chance of escape now self-employed concerned (but powerless) an empowered and informed member of society (pragmatism not idealism)
will not cry in public less chance of illness tires that grip in the wet (shot of baby strapped in back seat)
a good memory still cries at a good film still kisses with saliva no longer empty and frantic like a cat tied to a stick that's driven into frozen winter shit (the ability to laugh at weakness) calm fitter, healthier and more productive a pig in a cage on antibiotics

Errol Morris made a really good film about Hawking. He really is a pretty interesting and inspirational character. At a certain point in his career it became more difficult to do calculations, experiments with pen and paper so he just started doing them all IN HIS HEAD. Like blind people with terrific senses of hearing and smell Hawking's life energy has repurposed itself inward and made him an even smarter genius. I really wonder if he would have gotten as far mentally if he hadn't suffered such a reduced physical life. Life finds ways.
