has anyone got any specifications for the soundcard on the Apple iBooks? I've got a Snow iBook 900MHz, and i'm amazed at the sound quality is it just me, or is it the bomb? |

G5 mmmm. I too would like to possess one of these objects. But they're too freaking expensive! Have you seen the inside of the G5? It's as carefully designed as the exterior of a sports car. As opposed to the interior of a PC, which looks like someone took an ax to C3P0. |

oh yeah, if you build your own then you're less likely to have problems.... but especially if you're running a microsoft OS then i really do feel sorry for you :( Microsoft is B A D since i got my iBook, i am NEVER going to buy a PC again.... or maybe just one of those ultra tiny Sony Vaio sub-notebooks (the one with the video cam on the lid) ;) heh I'm a sucker for Cool Edit and TRacks |

I guess that's true about building your own, but mine is running windows xp pro, and I've never (since I built it) experienced any problems (I know, I find it hard to believe myself, but t'is true). |

XP Pro, i have to admit, in some cases is stable as hell. but the thing that fucks me off about XP, is 1. it nicked a LOT of ideas from Mac OS X 2. The digitally signed driver shennannigans....what the fucks that about??! |

Actually I disagree - you can get tremendous performance and stability out of a PC if you know what you're doing. But you have to be a techie, buy a white box and choose your own components. That's the beauty of a PC, that it's so open ended. The expense is in the time and knowledge required. But people like Apples for just the opposite reason - someone has already done all this testing and research and component-matching, and bundled it up in a slick sexy design so they can get the same stability and performance without having to learn a whole bunch of shit that is extraneous to what they want to actually use the computer for - making music or designing architecture or whatnot. The expense is in the money you have to spend as opposed to the time researching and tinkering. The problem with PCs is that people approach them thinking they can buy a Compaq or HP and just expect it to work like an Apple just works, while in reality it's stuffed with el cheapo proprietary motherboards and halfassed drivers with all kinds of components jammed together to maximise the profitability and lower the price. That's what gives PCs a bad name. But who can blame the PC users - like the Apple users, they don't want to be techies, they just want a working system. |

i do agree with you there..... the apples are made for out of the box workability, and yes, in the creative industry you don't wanna be spending days just getting stuff to work. PC's per se are good machines, you just have to choose the right OS for it. I would rather have a PC that i built myself with some distro of Linux, or Atheos installed, rather than use a microsoft os. I am glad that i spent most of my childhood being a geek and spending all day on my PC, because i know A LOT more than i would have known, and it made the migration from Windows 98, to Linux, to Mac OS 9, to Mac OS X very easy |

the major thing that microshaft nicked from OS X is the cd burning capabilities nativly in the OS there's other little niggles in there, but there are quite a lot of things nicked from OS X. |

You can only really know computers from using a command line interface. You have to for example understand directory structure to do that. It's astounding how few people understand this - they have no idea "where" their data is. I'd love to use Linux all the time - unfortunately my work requires some tools that are only available on Windows so far. :-( |

To answer your question, I do not know off the top of my head what the sound card is. But if I assume that you a running OSX 10.2 follow this directory path. Macintosh Hard drive -> Applications -> Utilities Then launch Apple System Profiler. Once it has finished scanning , click on the Devices and Volumes tab. Then click on the arrow next to PCI and Built-in AGP. This should reveal what the card type is. I think the audio and video cards are combined in many cases. My i-mac says NVDA GeForc4 MX Mac's are all still PC's (Personal Computer), They are just a better thought out integrated product rather than random components chucked in a poorly designed casing. Which is always going reduce the amount of potential for glitches/crashes and bombs. |

well, they're personal computers alright, but not in the same sense that PCs are PC's use a *86 architecture, based on the 8086 chips from days of yore. macs are based on RISC CPU's, (reduced instruction set), so they are a different breed |

ok, i'm seriously considering getting an ibook to do my graphic design work with. Does anyone here use photoshop 7 on it? Does it run ok? I've seen a second hand ibook for about £550, its the 600mhz with combo drive. You rekon its a good buy? |

Jaser: nah...not really, on portable and several consumer macs they are often located on different areas on the same motherboard, that?s all. hi guys, i own an apple ibook 800 Mhz, i play music live with it and record in my home studio as well, quite solid. Never had serious issues with it. I run Logic Audio and Ableton Live with no prob. AN apple g4 12" it's the best i think.. My girl uses photoshop and other graphic stuff with it and it's quite good.. cheers www.mindseye.it |

i'm running Photoshop 7 on my iBook 900MHz 384MB RAM system, and it's great i used to use Paint Shop Pro on Windows, and i would NEVER touch photoshop - i didn't like it but when I got my Mac and I got using Photoshop, i have come to like it better than anything else....paint shop pro is for kiddies! lol |

im sure you'd be able to get parts somewhere.. im sure there are apple wreakers around that buy busted macs and salvage parts.. if you went thru apple it'd prolly cost a pretty penny.. but if all else fails they prolly got parts too. its (the screen) lcd and portable so wont matter what country you order it from. it runs off batteries so the power voltage will be universal. |

do these ibooks ahve a line in?? i remember reading the specs a while ago and it didnt mention anything about one. the powerbooks mentioned it had one.. coz that would totaly suck if it didnt have one and you intended to use it for audio/music purposes.. i know you could rip stuff from cd for sample'n.. but line in is very handy. |

I've got a 500mbz original titanium powerbook g4, and it's shititng me... the 400/500mhz models had major defects; i.e. the paint peels off even incredibly quicker than the later models, and I've recently been hit by the random dead pixels on the LCD. i've got 3 nice colourful lines on my display. searching around indicates to me other people have the same issue and my display's probably going to die entirely soon. sigh. os x also fucking shits me to the max sometimes, so many stupid little bugs. i mean, its nice, i really love a lot of the mentalities; it definitely is a cool os, but too goddamn buggy at times. and its still too slow, even on a 1ghz g4. hoping the g5 will make things quicker. get to play with one in september, yay. that said though, whatever sound chip is in it (linux picks it up as a 'screamer', heh!), it fucking rocks - *so* clear. so amazingly clear. my sb live! sounds like shit compared to it. |

that said - i'm running 10.3 beta on my laptop, and i'm impressed. there are still some stupid bugs, but some of the major ones are gone; i'm hoping the bugs there are only because it's beta. g5 should make things a million times faster too. g5+10.3= rule, i hope. |

what was wrong with 10.2.4-6 ?? seems to work for me ok .. tho perhaps a bit sluggish. i've also heard the 1st generation g4 laptops have problems, something about the titanium bending (?) -> which i guess could fuck your pixelation. damn shame, apparently the new ones (17" and 12") and the new 15" ??!! have some new synthetic thing that's meant to stop shit like that happening? |
