For the others here who own this record...
Is it me or is the quality of this recording pretty dirty? I have a brand new copy, and I'm surprised how lo-fi the tracks sound...

Where did you get your brand new copy from? The mp3s on c8.com seem pretty decent, but I would imagine they weren't taken from the 7".

It was a sealed copy of the second pressing (green vinyl) I got a while back and hadn't played till today.

maybe it's the fault of the green vinyl. I don't own any coloured vinyl, but I hear that it doesn't reproduce the sound as well as black wax.

Yeah, I've heard the same... but I can't imagine the green vinyl would degrade the sound to such a major extent; I suspect it's the actual recording.
Anyone with either pressing that can comment on the sound quality?

Seven inches are known to reduce the quality of the music drastically. This is because the concentric circles of the groove are shorter (closer to the centre) than 12"s - which allows for less treble, less bass and a sort of horrid compression/distortion of the upper-mid. Combined with the lower volume allowed (due to the restrictions of the 7" format) you have recipe for the most useless format still in existence for audiophiles. Bring back shellac and the wax cylinder please.

No wonder my 7"s all sound a little crappy... I definitely hear what you're saying about the distortion in the upper-mids, too =/

Wow, I never knew that. I suppose it makes sense though. It's interesting that the quality of the audio you get off a record is dependent on
a) cleanness of record b) not being on the inner grooves of the 12" or on a 7" c) the type of wax (heavy, coloured etc) used.
Whereas a CD is of consistent, albeit disputed, quality. (Granted that dust and scratches can also affect a CD's playability).

Still, nobody cares much about audio quality of singles. Sooner or later, with the death of the singles market, record companies will sell you the mp3 to download.
