i started with fl studio, (i.e. "fruity loops") decent
sequencer as long as you make your own samples,
cool edit pro 2.0, - a decent wav editor.. there's better
out there, but it works..

and i still mainly use this shit today.. i'm an eternal
"n00b"

also, import and export between programs alot.. fl isn't a
good program for a kind of "program it, then save it from
fl, and the songs done" thing.. you've got to experiment and
go crazy if you want something interesting and non-cheesey
out of it..

yep, i'd go with that... get your samples / sounds into cool
edit or similar editor first and fuck with them a bit then
sequence it in frooty loops.

i started with sonic foundry acid and a bunch of loops
samples...
for making electronic music, you need three things
basically. (all this is optional of course)

a)something to make the sounds (synthethizers, your voice,
instrments, etc)
b)something to take the sounds and organize them together (a
"sequencer")
c) something to edit the sounds, and process them (an wave
editor)

for example, Reason does all those things pretty nicely. so
does fruity loops. fruity loops studio comes now with a
simple audio editor that works pretty well.
good choices for wave editors are cool edit, sound forge and
wavelab...

in my choice, i use a mixture of programs... i use fruity
loops to make sounds with the vstis (plug-ins that emulate
instruments), then sequence all them in acid-pro, i use it
for mastering too... i use sound forge for normalizing and
basic editing of the samples. for the drums, i just use
loads of samples and effects and sequence then in fruity,
then make loops and put then in acid.

hope something of all this babbling helps ^^

I started with something-tracker on the acorn archemedies,
and because of that i recommend Renoise or Buzz.

I started out in 91 with an Amiga 500 and Noisetracker 2.0
by Kaktus & Mahogny(?? damn my memory fails). I had 5
floppies with samples first. Then after a year I bought an
Ensoniq SQ1+ workstation. It wasn't until 95 that I bought
an 8-track cassette recorder and then my bedroom studio
really took off. It was nice to work and live with your
parents, man I had the money back then!

I started in '94/95 with an Atari ST + cubase, DX11 and an
Ensoniq sampler.
Moved onto hardware sequencers for a while, then Logic
audio, Cubase & Pro Tools on PC's - Now have settled down
with Renoise and a bunch of synth gear (Juno, 202,
Wavestation, etc...).
I only WISH I'd discovered tracker software earlier.

The original days back in '94 I had access to a whole studio
at school:

Atari 1040, Akai S1000, Drum Modules, massive midi synth,
Roland D110, U220, Big mixer, DAT etc. Never got enough time
to use it though. But recorded about 10 tracks on tape using
various equipment as I recall. Then got my own stuff. Cubase
in summer 1995. Korg 05 RW and Roland PC-160 midi keyboard
in late/early 1996/7. Started using the whole set up in
1997. Now use VST and VST Instruments etc plus my busted up
Korg when it decides to work.
