that may be true, but what idea is original, really? if you're going to criticize musicians for making music similar to that of other people, you might as well criticize every musician in existence. With all of the possibilities on our Dorian and Phrygian scales, there is always a chance that some guy twiddling in his basement is going to make something that may have a faint resemblance to a Bach song he's never heard before. The fact of the matter is, no matter what idea you may have thought of, there's about a million other people out there who have either done it or thought of it. Many bands in the 60s obviously ripped off the beatles, in the 70s punk bands imitating each other was commonplace (still is today), and even in the 90s Seattle rock bands borrowed concepts and sounds from one another. For instance, look at Nirvana. Some punk musicians agreed that when they first heard them, they considered them to be punk. But the radio stations called it "grunge." And "new wave" was originally a term coined by punk bands looking to become mainstream. And even Aphex Twin's SAWII was extraordinarily similar to the works of Brian Eno, and yet it was still hailed as being an intelligent and thought-provoking work. I know I sound like a dick, and you're most likely right, but you can't criticize anyone for not being original. Because there's no such thing as original anymore. :D |

This is quite ridiculous. At one point or another every IDM artist sounds like another. It springs from the use of similar instrument, effects etc. That is why if you notice all of the albums that are released in a similar time period share similar traits. Early UZIQ can easily be confused for early Aphex. Some of the Early Squarepusher tracks sound a whole lot like late period drill'n'bass Aphex etc etc etc. Moaning about this is quite childish considering this problem is a lot more common in guitar/bass/drum based Rock, riffs get lifted and reapropriated as do melodies and chord progressions. And lets not even get started on Hip Hop. |
