so when you're itching to make a track, but you keep
drawin' blanks, and anything you DO manage to turn into
something just ends up finely stewed shit, what do you do to
loosen up the 'ol...uhm...brain stuff?

stop trying.

leave the music.

watch a film, read a book, go out, whatever.

do anything except making music.

just make some music that doesn't require any thought, like
a cover or something.

read nonfiction books and learn stuff. You can even
interpret random reading out of context as if it were
talking about music to get "random ideas".

I ALWAYS just make breaks if I can't write anything... Just
cut up drum loops, add stupid noises, process them funny,
get the tracker software fired up, resequence them, render,
etc...
It's a really good habit to get into - Means you have
hundreds of starting points for tracks in the future - Or
sometimes when you're just looking for the right
drums/loop.
Making breaks is easy to - Don't need to be in any
particular frame of mind.

ambsace....

i meditate. not meditate like sit with my legs crossed and
chant, but i take my portable cd player, and take a walk. i
don't know about you, but i'm a kinetic thinker and i need
some sort of movement to get my brain working. I just grab a
cd - more than often something i haven't heard in a while -
and listen for something. something.

also, observe your surroundings. look for images that are
pleasing to your eye. you might find them inspirational.

a lot of my best music has also come out of emotion.

a lot of times, though, the best music comes naturally. i
can't recall how many times i've TRIED to write a track, and
it'll come out shit. But more than often, I'll be fucking
around and of course the track comes out good.

Let it come naturally. Don't try so hard. You have to wait
for it to come at the right time.

make the tiniest little change to the track, and then give
up again.. do hundreds of these at different states of
mind..at different times, then realize how crappy it is in
the long-run..

well yes
get off your ass and play in a real band
if you've got energy you can just jam until yer tired...
unless you don't know how to play an instrument... but if
you can fake some noise then yer not trying- yer not a real
musician

Listen to really, really crappy music. Then your shit won't
seem so bad :)

I don't know, if I'm stuck I'll just leave it and come back
another day. But good music is good for inspiration... Maybe
go outside, listen for some noise and then try to recreate
that noise. Your bound to come up with something during the
process...

To get inspiration I just sit and keep looping parts of the
track that I have. I loop it for hours literally. Then I
pick up a guitar or plug in my keyboard and keep bashing
away at notes. Once I get a basic riff I then keep playing
it till I get good at it. Then I record it at once so I
don`t lose the riff. I have been using the guitar a lot
lately. I think it is good to change approaches and
instruments. Keeps things fresh. And i never compare myself
to other artists, nor do I try to sound like them. I just
use what skills I've got and get inspired by myself, if that
doesn't sound too pretentious...

I dont know who said this, but once, somebody asked some
genious artist what he thought about inspiration, what did
he think inspiration was, and the artist answered:

inspiration? I dont know what it is, but I hope it comes to
me while I am working
