whoa! i got back tuesday morning and i didnt have the energy to type this up before. sorry!
i thought i would be fine, as i didnt notice anything of a jetlag when i got there, but at the moment my sleep patterns are messed.
anyway, the trip was great. a bit overwhelming, but great.
for those who missed it: i went to L.A, joshua tree NP, Oak Creek, Sedona, Grand, Bryce canyon NP, Yosemite NP, Zion, Vegas, Sacramento and San Fran, leaving out a few stops that werent too interesting, all in 10 days time. Crazy? yes, quite. Tho now at least i know where i wanna go back. (oak creek, bryce, vegas, yosemite and san fran)
one of the coolest things i visited was the getty center in L.A, if only for the mindblowing architecture and view over the city, Also the SFMOMA was really nice, tho AMOEBA RECORDS kicked everythings ass, shop wise. wow.
i FINALLY got mhtrt (for 10 bucks!) cause that was the only BoC cd i had on cd-r, now the collection is more or less complete, i also got Slag Boom Van Loon - So Soon, 2nd hand, for 5 bucks and Shpongle - Tales of the Inexpressible for 15. sweet deal!
in Vegas i got the 'His Dark Materials' box set, and i got a 4th paperback for free and i picked 'naked brunch' which i never heard of before but the title got my interest as ive been trying to read 'the naked lunch' for some time now.
vegas was awesome. scorching hot tho. geezus. lost money on a black jack machine, decided to go out and take pictures instead.
too many cool things.
also weird (scary things):
-beef jerky (wtf!? i wouldnt feed this to my cat!) -cheese in a can! (note the exclamation mark) -XTREME jello! (hahah, check out maddox's site, you'll understand why this was cool to find)
-corn pops (corn gone wrong!) -spam in a can -cookie dough in the form of a giant sausage -arsenic flavored tapwater (mmmm)
confirmed stereotypes:
-fat, ugly americans, squeezing themselves in their car, holding a giant cup of coke and a bag of chips, driving w/o seatbelt, eating and using the phone

while driving. american flag on antenna and/or sticker on bumper. not that these people annoyed me in any way. i'm sure they were really nice persons.
-american flags being everywhere in general
-people thinking that amsterdam is the name of our country, that we speak german etc..
either way, everybody i talked to was nice as hell. really friendly, laidback kinda people, always ready for a chat, and always very helpful.
the food:
excellent. we had buffets every day, so that means unlimited food and drinks. this isnt something that doesnt exist over here, but it certainly isnt as large scale as it is there. lot of variety, even tons of healthy things like fruit and salad ;) . also, burgers at mcdonalds for a buck! neat!
oh yes, also in vegas, i got to hold an actual beretta 92f pistol. my favorite. dear god that was sweet. not that i'm pro weapons, but the things themselves are interesting, the use of it just isnt. of course i had to start a converstion about the safety of guns in peoples homes, as i had just read more unnerving gun facts in Moore's 'stupid white men'. the guy who worked there was of course a big weapons fan, hunter and everything, but he was really friendly anyway. he told me how once a burglar broke into his house, so the guy got his shotgun and did nothing but the 'chhhk chhhk' thing ('u no wut i mean') and the burglar ran like the wind, stumbled over a chair and broke his leg. so this is a reason for the guy to have weapons in his house. fine with me. i'm just happy i dont need a gun to feel safe.
other random cool things:
-the fog in san francisco -squirrels -giant trees (sequoyas (sp?). i felt like becoming a tree hugger)
-french vanilla coffee at starbucks
whew. well thats pretty much all i can think of now. no pics yet as they are being developed as we speak (no digicam yet). thanks again for all the tips and comments (esp. amoeba records)!

I'm glad you got to see Yosemite, which is my favorite place on Earth so far.
You did a mad tour - that's a lot of space to cover in 10 days.

You didn't get mugged! How can you have a great trip in America if you didn't get mugged?
Come back over and take your complementary beating like a sissy Dutch man...

First person I've seen mention Shpongle on this board.
Haven't heard much by them, but I see a lot of Goa freaks rave of Simon Posford and his aliases.

i only read the 1st book (the golden compass, european version is called northern lights). it was excellent. very much looking forward to pt. 2 & 3.
i also recommend every1 to read stupid white men by michael moore. see the link in a previous post :P
daweeze: i probably didnt get mugged cuz i stayed away from 'the bad places'. hollywood was pretty laidback ;)
revpersona: i've seen shpongle mentioned before i think, but indeed its going in the goatrance/psytrance direction so maybe its not every1's cup of tea. its still a bit too weird for me too but i'm starting to like it. dorset perception is ace.
dubleOsyx: as you can imagine, my trip was a bit superficial. i only went to the major tourist places and although very nice, i doubt they represent everything that america stands for. fortunately i havent had to defend myself for my political statements, as is often the case for people from abroad who go to college there. our tour guide from england has been living in san fran for years now and she says its awful to have to explain why you critisise the government, but like living there anyway.
i dont think i could live there, if only for knowingly drinking poisoned tapwater. that does not mean i never want to come back tho. the country was even more beautiful than i could have imagined and i take a lot of comfort in the fact that the american people are doing their best to preserve it all.
i cant really compare it to anything. theres always similarities and differences.
i like the country i live in, but i love seeing other places!
