I've got an interview tomorrow for this job at a place that does marketing for sporting goods and housewares. sounds dull i know, but the flat rate starting pay is about $12 an hr. and i also make pay on commission. there's no door-to-door crap involved, so i'm betting its telemarketing. i'd really like to get this job so i can finally have some financial independence as well as support my wonderful girlfriend.
any advice?

try something else, telemarketing is sooo depressing... my friend did it for a bit but it's soul destroying.

a shiver went down my spine as soon as I read the word "commission" - not a lot of good comes out of it.

*thank you for your concern.
ick@ my typing
well i get a base salary too. not ALL of my pay will come from commission. the person who called me said the flat rate starting pay would be 12$ hr, not including commission. and that would definitely be more than i'm making now.

marketing is fucking evil. Telesales people should be shot. Media people in general deserve to die for one reason or another. That may seem controversial, but fuck you, youre wrong. Hahahahaha, who am i talking to again?

well, in my experience, the job can be okay when concerning commissions - the real thing you should be afraid for are your colleagues.
most of them will seem to be LIVING for the commission, in other words, are back-stabbing rats.
BUT! it does not have to be this way. good luck, mr. blender. :)

If this is true, then it means they sell things for $$$; meaning if the customers ask about something they will be adviced to buy whatever pays the seller the most comission.
This is not a good thing - but the way it works. I had a friend who worked at this electronics store, and he said it was the most "untrue/false" period of his life...

that's what working for commission more or less comes down to, yes.
it makes people behave quite nasty.
HA! I have a friend who worked at an electronics store too! his brother also worked there and his brother used to call his co-workers "rats".

not every song, ofcourse, but still.. it's about cutlery... your line of work..

i got the job! i've learned that it's not commission based sales - you make a flat rate, but get a bonus if you make good sales.
i'll be selling knives based on appointments w/ customers. it's not telemarketing, not door to door. they actually prefer the salesmen to be more laid back - that why there's a flat rate of $12 earned per appointment, and they say appointments usually last an hour.
so i don't have to be pushy.
finally! i have MONEY! w00t!

anyways, i get there, dressed nice, with my belt, slacks, button-up-shirt and tie, and everyone else there is dressed casually. I was sort of comforted to see that everyone working there was younger than i was. i get the easiest job app to fill out, and then they ask me a few questions like, "when can you start?" and "why did you apply?"
my boss, Mr. Applebury, was barely older than I was. Very laid back, didn't seem too uptight. Anyways, we sit through a one-hour session where he tells all the apllicants about the company and what they sell, and then gives us the easiest questionaire on earth.
and then a short interview of each applicant. and i got the job!
i'm officially a knife salesman. i start training tomorrow. i'll won't be able to see my girlfriend as much, which will suck, but i'll be able to spoil her, which is good.
