HERBIE HANCOCK
"INVENTIONS AND DIMENSIONS"
Blue Note

This album is unbelievably stylish and funky in ways that a
true xltronic will find infinitely rewarding, even though
it's an 'accoustic' record! It's rythmic explorations should
not be hard to approach for anyone accustomed to
electronica.

This is what blue not had to say about it when it was
reissued on cd in 1989:

For his third album, Inventions and Dimensions, Herbie
Hancock changes musical styles by explored a Latin-inflected
variation of post-bop with a small quartet. Hancock is the
main harmonic focus of the music — his three musicians
were bassist Paul Chambers, drummer Willie Bobo and
percussionist Osvaldo "Chihuahua" Martinez, who plays conga
and bongo. It is true that the music is rhythm-intensive,
but that doesn't mean its dance music. Hancock has created
an improvisatory atmosphere where the rhythms are fluid and
the chords, harmonies and melodies are unexpected. On every
song but one, the melodies and chords were improvised, with
Hancock's harmonic ideas arising from the rhythms during the
recording. The result is risky, unpredictable music that is
quite satisfying. Inventions and Dimensions displays his
willingness to experiment with a different sound and flavor
of music.

Coltrane played with Miles Davis on a number of Davis'
albums - most notably Kind of Blue. Which one childkiller
is referring to is anyone's guess. :)

Over at the Mu Board, I remember some people were comparing
Squarepusher's jazzy stuff to Weather Report. I'm so into
the jazz fusion thing - but I'll definitely check them out.

If we're offering jazz recommendations mine would have to
be:

Ornette Coleman - The Shape of Jazz to Come

What kind of mood on that? I used to love kinds of blue but
now I find it dour.

and i'd say that WR's jazzy/fusion stuff is a way better
than Sq's...(though i love everything Tom does:)

Weather Report are REALLY worth checking out. you won't be
disappointed :)

Dark Magus is *so* great, it's imho the first drum&bass
album ever.
