okay... so i bought this album and i think it is pretty good. Ofcourse some tracks are better than others, and it sounds a bit dated here and there. But really, i enjoy listening to it. The first 3 tracks = nothing but goosebumps :-D
I'm only very confused about the tracklisting. What is actually on it? The tracklisting on the cd doesn't help much (to say the least... if anything it just adds to the confusion :-p). There are 11 tracks on the cd, but it seems sometimes there are two songs in one track. The warp-site even says it has 18 tracks?!
I'm also very curious as to who actually made this music. From what i've always understood Black Dog was basically the two members of plaid plus some other guy. But the tracklisting seems to suggest that many different artists worked on this album. Two tracks are even by Plaid?!
Basically i'd just like to know what it is i'm listening to... :-)

FSOL's "dead cities" had duel tracknames, hard one to figure out, but the tracks are labelled clearly on the promo version

its only 11 tracks... but some of those tracks are divided into diferent parts by diferent artists and therefor you can count them as tracks and thats why some online stores have it as with 18 tracks
the artists: I am not sure but I guess its only the 3 members of the black dog... and depending on who of them did a track you have a diferent name

phob: "As for the tracks. Various "bolts" have been inserted between some of the tracks to create a seamless stream of music. Sometimes they are listed - sometimes they are not."
paco: "Both Bytes and Spanners are awesome. The "double tracks" on
Bytes are: 4. Phil1 (on Spanners they're called Bolts) 4b. Focus Mel - Atypic 4c. Phil2 5. Olivine - Close Up Over 5b. Phil3 7. Phil4 7b. Yamemm - Plaid 8. Phil5 8b. Fight the hits - Discordian Popes 8c. Phil6 10. Phil7 10b. Jauqq - Close Up Over "
revpersona: "All the names were used by Ed, Andy, and Ken. From what I gather they all wrote seperate tracks from various EPs and threw them all on Bytes.
For instance, Ed wrote all the Balil and Close, Up, Over tracks, while Andy was using Plaid and Tura.
While the album was first released in 92' many of the tracks
on their are from before then.
Now if only Ed would release some new/unreleased Balil material."

Okay, now i noticed that there is also a tracklisting printed on the cd itself. It's all beginning to make a little more sense to me now.
I can see there are seven tracks called "phil" inbetween the songs. Strange they don't mention them on the backside of the cd. But basically this works just like all the 'tak'-tracks on the double figure? Only on (bytes) they are put in the same track as another song.
"and depending on who of them did a track you have a diferent name"
Okay thanks alot :-) That makes sense... sort of.

Hi Surrounded, i give you the answer, be shure it is correct. At the time of the release of bytes, Black Dog was still under contract of GPR, so they have released Bytes on Warp with another name: Black dog productions. It is a compilation but all the tracks are made by the ed, andy and ken. Plaid: ed and andy, Balil, phil: ed, I.A.O: Ken. Xeper: andy.... This is the only correct answer because i have asked them personal back in the days!
