Oxygen 8 USB Keyboard - Shipping to AU?

Hiya,

I asked in an earlier post about what the go would be for a
beginner to start making music; a few recommended the Oxygen
8 USB Keyboard which looks fucking rad, and seems pretty
cheap too from the US sites I've looked at.

I've tried to source one here in Adelaide, but no go, music
stores here were absolutely no help at all and tried to flog
off a different keyboard to me which doesn't look half as
nice (and worked out more expensive).

Either:

1) Somebody in here from AU reads this and knows where I
can get one from, or

2) Somebody in here knows of a place in US/UK that will
ship it to Australia, reasonably cheaply. This could work
out expensive, so the cheaper the price/shipping, the
better.

Any suggestions?

Cheers!

haha, yeah, werd to the muthafuckin' avatar or something

herm, i see on the product site
(http://www.midiman.net/products/midiman/oxygen8.php)
there's a link to a product store there, which will ship for
$179 US + shipping, which seems damn cheap.

I've found no stores in AU that even stock the thing.

/cry

I want it now ;(

i'll add that that store doesn't seem to ship to anything
apart from US.

what i'd really like is somebody in AU that stocks it, but
herm. as long as i get it...

The music store near me in Perth has it stocked. They're
called Kosmic Music. I would like to get it soon. I don't if
that's much help for you though.

Check out the Evolution MK range as well...the MK-225c is
closest to the Oxygen8 and in my opinion just as good.

Heh, yeah, but is it as cheap?

One thing that made me go WHOA NELLY@!# to the Oxygen was
it's price.

Yep it is about the same price if not cheaper :D

Donutman: Heh, thanks - maybe they'll send to Adelaide.
And yeah, tolstoyed, no kidding, that's why I'm not so sure
about importing it. I've tried to import things before and
not only is the shipping insane, australian customs are
cunts and I'll probably have to pay AGAIN on top.

Is $299.00 Au dollars expensive? I have no idea about
exchange rates.

Heh, you're right, it is cheaper.

But is it really as good as the Oxygen? And is it supported
under OS X? Another thing that impressed me about the
Oxygen was that it's USB interface seemed widely supported,
and there were plenty of people that loved it. This doesn't
seem to have the same reputation.

As far as I know it is full supported under OS X. It also
uses a USB interface so you have no problems there. It
doesn't look as pretty as the Oxygen8 but I think the main
reason it isn't as well known is because the Oxygen 8 has
been heavily promoted by Native Instruments.

I should add that I have an Oxygen 8 and an Evolution
MK-249c (the 225's big brother) and I find controller
assignment much nicer on the evolution.

Reading some reviews now; yeah, it is supported under OS X.

Herm.

http://www.allans.com.au/Products.asp?prod=M249CUSB

That's available for just a bit more - any advantage getting
a keyboard with more keys?

Any big disadvantages with having a smaller keyboard?

(Sorry, I know next to nothing about this, want to make sure
my purchase is decent).

If you are using it for live laptop gigs then obviously the
smaller the better, but if you have plenty of space I would
go for the mk-249c :D

heh - i have a powerbook g4. the bigger one has good
reviews, and more knobs sounds good, but the smaller one
might make me want to carry it around and use it more.

review's seem to point that they aren't as durable as the
oxygen's, which seem to be designed for portable use.

hmm. choices.

from a technical perspective of interfacing with programs;
what gives more options, the oxygen, or the evolution?

Both basically the same from my experience. I agree the
Evolutions seem less designed to be bashed while being
carried, but I only carry mine around the house so it's not
a problem :P

okay, ultimate question really : from a perspective of
creating music, is it a pain in the ass having the smaller
keyboard?

from a live gig perspective i see the keyboard would be used
more as a programmable midi controller?

or am i just confused? :/

offline xf from Australia on 2003-07-15 08:31 [#00779565]
Points: 2952 Status: Lurker

yeah, see, my choice of having the smaller one over the
bigger one will be dertermined solely by the fact i can take
it around to some places and not have the thing be bashed to
death.

size is therefore an issue too - will it fit into a
standardish laptop bag?

offline xf from Australia on 2003-07-15 10:34 [#00779747]

well, i've decided on the smaller evolution, going to try
and buy the bastard tomorrow. bet there's no stock in
adelaide, though.

from all the reviews (which are few), there's apparently
some problems with the oxygen's, and the evolutions seem to
be virtually identical, anyway.

nobody's answered my question on whether a bigger keyboard
is substantially better then a smaller one, though, so i'm
assuming it isn't a huge deal.

maybe hold out till novation bring out thier controller
keyboard? but personally i'd get the oxygen 8 or the ozone
if your on a laptop

offline xf from Australia on 2003-07-15 10:44 [#00779768]
Points: 2952 Status: Lurker

yeah, i've been looking at the ozone too. any reason why
you wouldn't go the evolution?

another problem is I can't find anybody that stocks the
oxygen/ozone in AU, apart from a previous post which
mentioned some place in perth. importing the bastard'll
prove interesting and expensive.

I tried one of the small oxygen keyboards and didn't like
the feel. It had a spongy response. I like something with a
snappier touch.
