today, my new project is mostly about .. classical music !

PHIL CONNORS : what a SHOCK.

I will be programming classical music in the style of Wendy
Carlos (Clockwork Orange soundtrack). I programmed the first
piece last night, Fantasia in C minor, and it sounded
fucking amazing ! Really energetic and trippy ! I'm gonna
try more adventurous stuff, and it's gonna be dope ! I can't
wait to share it with you people !

Oh, when the time comes, I'll need a free site that can host
high-quality mp3s without a size limit - anyone know of any
they can give me? thanks !

It WILL be electronic music ! Haven't you heard the
Clockwork Orange soundtrack ! This is old-school Electronica
! :P

wait... you are going to program existing classical music,
into electronic pieces... or you are writing your own
pieces?

I hope I never have to quote Phil Collins ! Phil Connors is
Bill Murray's character in Groundhog Day. He says that line
after Ned Ryerson informs that he sells life insurance !

Honest, this project is good ! I'm very excited about it,
and I'm taking lots of my old piano sheet music home with me
to work on it ! :D

bYe bYe for now !

well, that's the thing - I aim to start with existing
classical pieces, to get the feel for it. I have, of course,
my own piano compositions that I've penned over the years,
so I may see how one of those sounds programmed in. In the
end, I hope to write an Electronic Symphony. But shit, that
will take a LOT of planning, minute detailing and more
experience than I have so far. So, I'll program
progressively complex pieces 'til I get the knack of it !

(To those who downloaded my Satie stuff, that pales into
insignificance !)

pretty cool man

a few months ago, I did a reworking of a John Cage prepared
piano piece, made it into a downtempo IDM track.

I never finalized it, but it was pretty sweet. It was like
John Cage was meant to write IDM, cause it translated
realllly well.

Cool, sounds nice Marlowe. Use loads of old analogue string
sounds, they sound lovely :)

If it's possible, try to record some electronic instruments
in a real concert hall to get the genuine acoustics and
reverb. Probably a bit impractical, but there's nowt wrong
with a bit of ambition, lad.

you should let me put some beats under it man

hehe manic, much as I'd love the opportunity to record the
acoustics in a concert hall, I don't have a microphone or a
DAT recorder or anything like that :) Thanks for the
suggestion tho - looks like it's gonna have to be
electronically created ambience and reverb. :)

Zeus - is this Cage piece you transcribed, online anywhere?

what kind of beats did you have in mind? I was thinking of
making it entirely retro electronic, and I'm using only an
anaglogue synthesizer simulator. I would really like the
kind of percussion used in the Clockwork Orange soundtrack.
I think that's just real percussion Effexed up.

you could host them at www.mp3.com.au - no size limit, no
limit on how many tracks.

only limit is, 128k mp3's max.

nah, like I said, I never finalized it. It kind of fell to
the bottom of my priority list, cause I had lots of school
work at the time.

Maybe ill give it another go, now that I got the time...

Ah, well, it was a nice idea :)

Electronic reverb is good enough though. Just try to create
that big, concert hall sound if possible. Then again, the
tracks might sound even more interesting without reverb -
who knows? Experiment!

Yeah, I was experimenting with the reverb last night -
actually sounded good with either ! In more complex tracks,
I'll go for some Dynamic Knob Twiddling (D.K.T.) - this
Fantasia in C minor was only 4 pages long - but WHAT a 4
pages !

Thanks for the suggestion Alex, but I was wanting the mp3s
to be 256kps :)

Zeus, you should definately work some more on the track -
it's always good working with 'classical' (and its progeny)
music to study construction and all the rest of that stuff -
I've always found Bach especially rewarding to study.

yeah, Bach is the man. Ive taken 2 counterpoint classes,
which are basically just "lets study bach" classes. Im
taking advanced counterpoint in the fall (4 part fugues!)

It really is a different way of thinking... and I respect
Bach so much more now, seeing all the crazy stuff thats in
his work.

mm.

I know of a friend who could maybeee host them.. he comes on
here sometimes, FatherClem.
you'd have to upload your tracks to his ftp and he can put
them online. he had plans about stuff like this, don't know
if he still would like to.

he's on vacation for a weeks, so I can't ask him now. could
do so when he returns and you still would like to. :)

Bach is simply incredible - I've studied counterpoint some,
and of course, he is the zenith of counterpoint
construction. When I first studied it, I didn't realise
there were so many rules in counterpoint writing! I didn't
like that restriction of freedom much, but I guess you have
to know the rules well in order to transcend them.

Alex, that sounds pretty cool - I won't be done for ages yet
- last night, I attempted to start Beethoven's Piano Sonata
no. 1 in F minor - WHAT a nightmare - I'm still going to
have to continue with less complex pieces for a while yet !
:D
