Creating electronic music.

I've wanted to get into creation of electronic music for
quite sometime. I played with Mod Tracker (XM/MOD files -
imagine MIDI, but also with wav samples) for a while, armed
with my mouse, but I never really got anywhere. It was fun,
but it all sounded cheesy and awful.

I felt I needed some Real Tools.

I've got a bit of money/time to play with now; and I'd
really like to get into it. Mind you, I know next to fuck
all about how to do it. I worked in the production
industry as an IT guy for a while (quicktime streaming
mainly, had some great times), and I saw/played with plenty
of cool stuff, but I'll be stuffed if I can remember what
anything was. My memory's like a sieve.

(fyi; my drive for this is purely personal interest,
probably much like most of you).

I've got both a decent PC and a powerbook; but that's it.

I'm looking at an initial budget of around $1K; not sure
what I should get first. Midi keyboard? Sampler doohicky
thingy? Some decent software packages?

Would love to hear what people think.

my powerbook's an aging 500mhz with 784mb ram, and 20gig
hd.

its often slow to use at times, that said though, i still <3
it.

mac reason any better then the pc version? thinking i
should probably stick with pc's for this kind of stuff until
i upgrade the powerbook.

Instead of buying a cheapo MIDI-only keyboard, look for a
Roland Juno 106 or similar synth. That way you get MIDI and
an easy to edit synthesizer. The 106 is dated, but it will
teach you how basic subtractive synthesis works and you get
the most beautiful synth strings and basses from it. It's a
very hands-on piece of kit. Every parameter has a slider or
knob. Prices on 106 and other Junos go from $150-350-to rip
off.

nice, this is the kind of stuff i want to hear.

wonder if i can get it easily here in au? finding specific
midi stuff on behalf of other people has proven to be
fucking difficult/impossible in the past.

Lots of albums have been made on 500 powerbooks, they are up
to the job :)

reason is a good start but it is 100% better with a usb midi
keyboard, like the oxygen8 or evolution ones. perhaps a
small behringer ub series mixer for a couple of mic/line
inputs and a cheap roland fx unit. heres some links:
behringer ub series mixers
roland-look at the smaller units in the dance or dj
sections. good ones are the mc09 and the EF303(?) i think.

heh, fair enough. i'm currently running 10.3 dev beta on
mine, really impressed. it's fast as absolute shit, and
fixes some of the annoying bugs that have had me peeved for
a while (mainly vpn/finder/samba stuff).

what tools to people typically use on powerbooks to make
electronic music? i'd figure something like reason,
something like protools, anything else?

just strip the power books programs and run it lean maybe
get osx jaguar because its tweeked for audio

heh, why is it better with usb keyboards?

or you mean midi keyboards in general?

yeah - i had reason 1.0 on my pc for a while. i was going
to get a midi keyboard for it, but it never happened; its
awful to use without one, so i never really played with it.

nice.

trying to find a source oxygen 8 usb keyboard in australia
now; any other nice keyboards people recommend?

something under $1K AU would be decent; i've seen some damn
cool units for a few thousand, but not willing to spend that
much *yet*.

"what tools to people typically use on powerbooks to make

oh god, the list is endless...

personally, Im using Logic 6, with the Emagic Synth
Collection. Im probanly gonna buy Absynth 2 next week, and
Reaktor in the fall.

there are shit loads of programs out there... but as a
begginer, I wouldnt reccomend much else besides Reason...
you dont want to be in too far over your heard.

Reason is a great learning tool for begginers, and will last
you a long time, as It is also used by more advanced
producers as well.

You cant beat it for the price.

usb keyboards=1 cable only. its powered by the usb bus so
high portability and no need for a external power supply.
true plug n play, not plug n pray, easier for laptops, since
not many have gameports(for midi plug) but do have usb. but
any midi keyboard allows you to do things 10x quicker, since
if you want to record a simple chord sequence, 50 clicks
turns into a couple of clicks, 3 or4 keypresses and done!

sounds good. reason's one of those all singing all dancing
tools, right?

wow, i've heard some fantatic stuff about logic. would love
to see it in action.

When you grow out of reason you could rewire it to cubase sx
, its all good baby!

i think if u got the money deffinately invest in a hardware
sampler, it'll take alot of strain off your computer, plus,
they will NEVER crash, and it does what it says, it doesnt
differ unlike computer specs, just an idea

mmmm

but you can do so much more with softsamplers now...

offline Spacecadet on 2003-07-13 08:53 [#00776814]
Points: 1790 Status: Lurker

also i'd say dive in the deep end and use cubase sx, anyone
with half a brain and can read a manual will have it figured
out in a couple of months and in my opinion the results are
far far far better than reason/fruity loops etc

yeah i depends on your computer spec, with a hardware
sampler you get your 128 voice polyphony or whatever,
kontakt kills the vst usage, of course you can always mix it
down to audio which helps

offline dave_g from United Kingdom on 2003-07-13 08:56 [#00776820]

yeah couldnt agree more. if you ever get the money get an
akai s5000 or z4 or z8. ive got the s5000 and its solid.
never goes wrojng, never crashes, easy to use, as powerful as
a pc but streamlined to produce the best fastest audio. the
s5000(and larger s6000) have huge screens, so are ideal for
spendind hours tweaking. the z4 and z8 have 24/96 and the
s5000/6000 are 16/48 but are still the bomb. dont bother
with anything other, go with the best. oh dont get roland or
emu samplers.go with the akai.2nd hand are good, you can
pick them up for about £500 give or take a bit.

yeah, and now with the softsynth vst explosion the price of
hardware is falling, i recon u can pick up a high end emu or
akai for a good price now, if i had the money, i'd use
hardware
