actually, i'm a deftones fan myself blatantecho!
around the fur is personally my favorite album -- i love mx, it's one of my fave songs ever, and i fairly enjoyed white pony - i thought it was better than adrenaline at least. i have not heard the new album... how is it in comparision to their others?
deftones are one of the few harder rock/alt bands i can stand these days.
FAVE DEFTONES SONGS: 1. mx 2. rx queen 3. the chuaffuer (did i spell that right? it's a duran duran cover i have on a bootleg)
4. bored 5. pink maggit

I acutally haven't bought it basically cuz I'm broke at the moment.
It's no white pony, kinda of an evolution of Around the Fur, but there are some stand outs, such as HEXAGON, as I've been saying, but they pussed out and didn't make it the single.
Minerva is just like every accesible deftones song, which isn't bad, but when they show they can go in the Hexagon direction, I wish they would just go for it.....

it's really frusttrating when they COULD go the Hexagon or even White Pony direction, and instead they go safe.
I mean, Team Sleep, fine, but the Pumpkins did Adore, and it failed $$ wise, but they wanted to do that so they did.
Why can't the deftones go Team Sleep for an album, then rock again? I just wish they didn't play it safe, Hexagon is such a raw song, but played so tightly it isn't hard or edgy or anything, it's perfect, and they can do that so well.
fucking, come on Chino

I'm not one to disagree with you tits, I respect your knowledge of music, but Chino is the Deftones.
Reading recent interviews with the band, they make it clear he writes and creates most most everything.
In any event, Team Sleep came from White Pony, in a progressive sense, and he made White Pony, he made Team Sleep.
If it's not appropriate for him to go the elctro route under the Deftones name, then it's hard to still trust the deftones.

I think I muddled what I meant, just that if Hexagon is a ripping new direction they rock in, but they release a safe song like Minerva, the record label is either breathing down their throats to push units, or they are breathing down their own throats.
I truely believe they want to go the Hexagon direction, that song is so good, so in your face but so well done.
I'm not Chino, but I don't see why they play it safe when people would love Hexagon and the Deftones for having huge balls to make that their single, they have to hear it first........

eh i'm not going to debate you on this.. the only thing i will say is this copy-and-paste:
The idea for Team Sleep came about when Deftones label Maverick asked for an acoustic version of the band's "Be Quiet and Drive." "I really enjoyed doing that. It was simple, I could work on the music by myself, and use my own ideas that weren't really typical Deftones-type material." The Deftones' track "Teenager" from "White Pony," originally started out as a Team Sleep song, and is the only song on that album that uses a drum machine. "I hadn't written any vocals for it," says Moreno. "I played it for the band, and they were cool with it being on the album. Then Stef [Carpenter, Deftones' guitarist] and Frank collaborated on adding extra sounds to it."

Hexagon was sort of the unofficial first single, they gave out singles of it, (a promo of sorts) I agree it should have been the first REAL single though, Minerva is great but Hexagon is more true to the Deftones' roots.

I've been listening to Deftones since they were on that old show on mtv called "indie outing" or something. Just something that's stuck with me.
I think the new album is really good. Minerva is a fine single, and Needles & Pins would've made a good one too. That one's pretty classic-sounding.
I like Hexagram, but I wouldn't have wanted it to be a single because it's the first track on the album and it kind of opens up with a bang, so-to-speak. Kind of keep it as a surprise or something.

what do you mean chino is the deftones? up until this album all of the guitar was written by stef, and this was the first album that chino actually wrote music for.. i've also read interviews that say they sometimes base songs around beats that the drummer creates, and i'm sure the more electronic songs are done with a lot of help from the dj/sampler/keyboard player, delgado. chino is more of the singer and lyric writer for the band the main creative force in the band.. i'm they all write about the same amount of the actual music, if not more than chino does, besides this newest album, where chino took part in writing some of the lighter guitar parts.

chino actually said he didn't play guitar on the new album and he felt guilty for encroaching on his bandmate's territory on the white pony (i for one enjoyed the extra guitar he added to that actually)
anyway i didn't debate BE on that chino = the band thing cos it's just so inaccurate.. i'll leave it up to him to find that out tho

ugh, tits you took everyone so out of context.
I will maintain, certainly, on this album, but even on the last albums, that Chino dictates the direction the deftones head.
I never said he was the entire band, or he played all the intrusments a la Billy Corgan on Siamese Dream. What I did say was he influences, and might even control the style of music the Deftones produce. He doesn't control all of it, but a majority.
Hence he could take them down the Hexagon path, or Minerva path. He can do both, the band can do both.
I'd like to see, I think everyone would respect them more also, the deftones playing the style they want, which I maintain, just on listening to them, is more Hexagon than Minerva.
In any event the point was lost along the way, but you don't need to slag me off as someone who doesn't know what they are talking about and will eventually find out just because I disagree with you on the chemistry of a band.

there are a LOT of interviews on deftones sites (my favorite). i'm NOT trying to pick on you, i'm just adamant about my belief that other members of the band write most of the music (as opposed to JUST chino). i mean Cfern, who has known them for years, just said stef writes the guitar riffs, which are as important to these songs as chino's vocal melodies.

on the deftones - these guys used to be my absolutely favorite band, back when i didn't know about much music. white pony is still one of my favorite records ever. i love the feel of it, i think the songwriting is great. the only song on their that i think really blew was teenager (well i guess i wasn't too fond of elite, but it is the deftones i guess). i think both of their previous albums have worthwhile songs.
but this self-titled business. one of the worst followup records i have ever heard in my life. i couldn't find one salvagable song on it. even the cover was terrible. like they ran out of ideas. i was very very disappointed with it.

the deftones albums have gotten progressively worse through their career, in my opinion.
well maybe the first two are equal to me, but their newer albums directions for me, have been interesting, it seems like the songwriting is less good than their earlier material. It's like they don't even try to make their new styles fit into the context of their original/overall sound ..like they'll make one song that's completely electronic, or completely soft and melodic.. instead of just incorporating that into their general sound they just do it for a few awkward-sounding songs..
