RAM upgrade..

the limit for my system is 1 GB.

I have only 128 MB.

apparently what I need is DDR 266

but for my system all I can find is SDRAM .. can I get this
instead? is it just slower than DDR?

I have 3 slots for RAM memory. since RAM is only as fast as
its slowest module, might it be a good idea to replace the
original one as well?

getting 1 512MB chip, and 1 256 MB chip to be placed
alongside the 128 MB chip
is the best plan for optimization, correct?

is there that much of a difference between DDR and SDRAM

errr hold on

it depends on what your motherboard takes. check whats
already in it. if its sdram (which it should say on the
memory) then you can only put sdram in that slot. and again
if its 100 mhz or 133 mhz make sure to match the same one up
in the other slots.

Stick to what the sticker on your current RAM module
says!

Not all RAM is clearly and understandably labelled. Theo,
check the mainboard manual for details...or download it from
the manufacturer

So I went and did some research so I could explain the
difference to ya, and since I was clueless as to exactly
what was different between the types of RAM... here's what I
came up with

DDR is basically more advanced SDRAM. The reason it is way
better, and the reason you CANNOT put SDRAM in a DDR slot,
is because it transfers data twice per clock cycle, which
was the big new technology. DDR thus stands for "Double Data
Rate"

Even if you don't care... a clock cycle is a square wave, it
has a rise and a fall each cycle. SDRAM only transmitted
data on the rise of the clock cycle. DDR transmits on both
the rise and the fall.

So you have to get DDR for a DDR slot, because it doesn't
know what to do with SDRAM.

Also, I'd just use the 256 and 512 or 2x512... you won't
need much more than that, the extra 128 will probably end up
just causing problems.

Personally, I'd grab 2x512 sticks since RAM is getting so
darned cheap nowadays... I'm running on a gig right now on
this box.

Hope that helped!

No....'cos 512x2=1024 which is 1Ghz

The numbers double with computers
1 2 4 8 16 32 64 128 256 512 1024

1Gb not Ghz

I thought it was 512 MB

hmm.. so how much could I get if I kept the original 128

Just take out everything and put in 2x512... the 128 is
essentially worthless

what about buying industry standard/generic RAM? or buying
ram from gateway's site produced by kingston or some other
company

but I have 3 spaces for ram

i have been wondering about a ram upgrade recently as well.
my machine is 1.4 GHz Celeron but it only has 128 MB of ram
and im running windows xp. everything runs amazingly SLOW.
even if i want to bring up a right-click menu it takes a
second or two to load up. the only reason that i can think
of for this is memory. will getting 2 512 MBs to replace my
128 solve the problem?

Check Crucial... they have a selection menu for which menu
you need

Don't worry about the third slot, 2x512 is all you need.

Getting ONE 512 should fix your problem.

If you're doing music, you'll use the RAM up to 1Gig
(assuming you're using Win XP). if you're doing heavy
plugins or processing.

If not, then 512 is more than enough... the last numbers I
read was moving up from 128 to 512 is around a 50% increase
in performance, and it's absolutely necessary to have at
least 256 RAM when you're running win XP

So yes, it will probably solve your problem of speed... but
I don't know the details of your box so I couldn't say
definitively one way or another

wow. that's really helpful. all i knew before was that SD
has two notches on the bottom...and DDR only has one. yeap.
i'm a bank of information.
