Huh, I don't remember a damn thing about the soundtrack.
Kinda classical sounding?

imo, the movie is a masterpiece -
5. Mental Boy is very yummie, too bad it's only 1:43

the soundtrack is not the same as the motion picture score -
the score are original compositions by Thomas Newman. The
soundtrack is something entirely different.

any good?

yeah, I bought the soundtrack first, under the impression
that the original compositions would be there, but the
soundtrack only holds the songs played in the movie; don't
remember which, but like the music Lester listens to during
his work-out in the garage - regular songs, kinda..

no, not any good :)

I can't remember much about the soundtrack, apart from that
main track so I'll have to check it out =oD

the soundtrack is nice. has some really nice work on there.
Thomas Newmans score for "The people vs. Larry Flynt" is
also good.

American Beauty is overrated, as a film I think. I hate that
voice-over. totally unnecessary. and the forced artiness of
the boy, not very convincing.
the thing I really, really disliked was the cop-out
at the end. here we have a girl who professes she likes
having sex - no love involved, she just likes sex. but what
do we find out at the end? she lied. she is still a nice
little virgin. phew!

My last pre-boycott RIAA purchase arrived today, the
soundtrack to Solaris. Fantastic stuff.

I love the voice-over; Kevin Spacey is very articulated,
he's got a pleasant ironic slash sarcastic voice, and a
great way of telling.

The cop-out at the end you're referring to, is a tiny bit of
the whole point; to wrap yourself in shiny paper to conceal
what really lies beneath; The Truth, The Weakness and so
forth, imo.

yeah, I loved this movie... and yeah, it wasn't what I
expected... great commentary on the current reality of
suburban family life...

plus I also find it very inspiring, that the main guy
(forget his name) can turn full circle at the midway point
of his life, and find happiness and contentment like
that...

I love that movie & I own that soundtrack. Its to hear that
you like it too. Thomas Newman is ace IMO his Score for
Green Mile is nice aswell.

He also did some stuff for About Schmidt. Have you noticed
that About Schmidt (in the Trailer e.g.) has the same theme
as American Beauty ?? That really confused me..

i didn't notice this (haven't seen the about schmidt
trailer), but something i notice about newman is that he has
a very distinct style and he doesn't stray. so a lot of his
stuff sounds the same...absolutely PLAYER, but very very
similar.

he did the theme for "six feet under".

which is written by the same person as American Beauty.

i hate the fact that alan ball feels that he's got to show
faggots in a good light just so he can make the main
prtoagonist a faggot. Those two gay guys in the film were
totally plastic characters introduced to balance the scales
against the evil doings of the ex-army guy. Let's face it,
gays are bad.

Got to agree with you...gays are bad people.

*grabs random gay person from the street and reprimands
them* 'Bad gay. Bad, bad gay.'

Anyways, in response to the main topic...Thomas Newman is a
great composer...as good as Craig Armstrong who is
definitely overrated IMO.

"plus I also find it very inspiring, that the main guy
(forget his name) can turn full circle at the midway point
of his life, and find happiness and contentment like

funkmaster, but doesn't he realize that the happiness and
contentment he has found is just another illusion? after
all, all he has done is reverted to his teenage dream of
happiness and contentment: building up his body, chasing
the hot girl, driving the fast car, dispensing with
responsibility. the true moment of realization is when he
recognizes the face of his illusion, and sees the "hot girl"
as the potential victim of his mindless exploitation. his
death symbolizes this transformation. in his death, he
looks back and is grateful for every moment, even those that
he squandered in ignorance.

i thought this was an excellent film.
