musician VS. artist

is it possible to define a musician seperately from an
artist?

i personally believe that anyone can be a musician, but it
takes a real special someone to be an artist. now, i had an
argument with a girl last night, where my main point was
that most new county musicians (and
pop/r'n'b/rock'n'roll/rap/whatever for that matter) are not
really artists - but only musicians - because in order to be
an artist - you need to be creating something new without
following the guidelines set by someone else

now - according to this definition - i argued that people
who draw charicatures, or people that paint landscapes, are
typically not artists, but painters or drawers because they
are following traditional art theory right? a standard
created by another person or group.

do i sound hypocritical or completely ridiculous? or am i
making perfect sense?

I would agree totally with you, although the interpretation
of the words is subjective, I think the fundemental thinking
behind what you are saying is spot on :D

the distinction between an artist and a musician is
ultimately a technical one.

a musician is someone who possesses the skills necessary to
interpret and perform a piece of music which has been
written by someone else - they have a technical acumen to do
so via the formal knowledge of musical theory, notation,
etc., but may not be inclined or have the talent to compose
music on their own accord - a concert pianist is a primary
example of this.

an artist, on the other hand, is not merely a performer - he
or she is someone who may or may not have a formal musical
background, but what separates him/her from a mere musician
is the fact that they also compose the music which they
perform. so in this way, it's moreso a difference between a
mere performer and a composer.

that's obviously just one definition, but it could also be
argued that a musician is a talentless twat who may indeed
be the author of his/her own repertoire, but does it
principally as a means of making a buck, rather than being
driven by an intrinsic urge to create, which is what
separates them from an artist.

thats a good arguement manticore - but i think that it is
wrong to stereotype the musician as "out for a buck." there
are many musicians out on their own just trying to survive
doing what they love - and i personally do not find anything
wrong with that. but when it comes to musicians like
metallica, well, thats a differant story altogether.

In any genre of art (music, dance, painting, scuplting), it
is slightly vulgar to refer to yourself as an "artist"-
that's what other people should do, it's a praising term.
It's polite to refer to yourself as a painter or musician,
etc.

I agree with you...what you do is paint. Art is what others
see in your work. To call yourself an artist is just short
of masturbation.

corticalstim : I would agree with you...the artist and a
musician are completely different people. Martha Agerich or
Glen Gould are musicians. They can play Beethoven and Bach
like no other...but Bach and Beethoven were the artists.

i call myself a composer first and foremost

but also a musician

and sound designer

and producer

so many terms, and being an electronic artist, you kind of
take all of the roles.

I don't think it was very nice of Zeus not to accept
ecnadniarb's apology, although
his response was hardly appropriate either.

I think this is going ot be one of those situations where
neither party will drop it. I ask you to do so and not make
me have to close the thread or temp ban anyone.

the way a 'musician' performs could be artistic. like jazz
music, the musicians are following the guidelines of a
written song but they also improvise on top of that.

all performers, put a piece of themselves in a performance.
it's this human element that seperates us from machines.
some people may be more and less creative but nobody is a
total robot. accept maybe autistic kids.

Whilst I dont think his inital post was that friendly he did
say, "Let's just call it a truce and forget all te stupid
stuff
that has gone before."

That's probably as close to an "apology" as you'll get out
of him...

I hardly see how that constitutes "I think this is going ot
be one of those situations where
neither party will drop it."

Im not the one starting this crap.

You didn't see it as an apology and an attempt at a truce
because it didn't involve a large tub of petrolium jelly and
a table to bend over.

blatently just you trying to look like you did nothing
wrong. you are an instigator.

ANYWAY..
back on topic.

i would say though, britany spears is closer to an
instrument than an artist but even she is a little artistic,
a little.
but an autistic is just mathmatically punching the keys on
the piano so i would say that is not art.

(squabbling like a married couple on a message board is NOT
artistic.)

yes i fully understand the problems you have about not being

How the fuck can I ignore you when you barge into shit that

And whilst I will probably end up with some sort of ban from
this I am not going to stop using the board because of two
or three people that don't like me (yes that's right, don't
be pretending it is all one way).

It is funny watching you attempt to be mature and rise above
things when at the end of the day you are making as much of
a dick of your yourself as I am.
