if you're planning to create music on a system ,I wouldn't
recommend having internet on it also.

the net is dangerous. best to keep your shissles
seperated,.internet on a desktop / music making on a laptop.
Thats how I do it.

recommendation for laptop : anything fast with a lot of
internal ram !

hahaha, dunno what you want centrino for. from what i've
heard all you really get is a new logo and commercial. but
hey, it's your shit, get what you want.

"if you're planning to create music on a system ,I wouldn't

recommend having internet on it also. "

That one was fun - the only reason for not having internet
is that it easily eats up your musicmaking time....

theo, get a mac - ALL serious musicmakers in NYC use them!

If you are on a really tight budget don't worry about CPU
speed, anything above 1Ghz should do you fine...it is worth
buying a cheaper one with a good standard amount of memory
and spending the money you saved on avoiding the better
processor on a 512Mb stick of RAM.

Check out the Dell 600m, and the Toshibas, etc...

Vaio's blow in my opinion. Sony is nothing but a world of
pain.

That's my second choice after an IBM T40... this is assuming
you want portability over speed/extra ports/stuff like that

Buy the minimal amount of RAM, then get 512 worth from
Crucial

Ecnadniarb is totally right... RAM is more important that
processor for music making/performing... anything over 1Ghz
processor will be more than enough

Might want to wait... Intel just announced a low-battery
life 1GHz Centrino which will be put in laptops really soon,
probably for around that price... that's what I'm waiting
for

"ALL serious musicmakers in NYC use them!"

Dunno about that, Portishead's engineer told me a couple of
months ago, "Everyone in the UK uses macs, some of the
americans use PCs, but they're in the minority."

Unless you want to take it around with you or someone else
is buying it for you, then you are paying for the
portability of the machine.....a desktop would be better
value for money in my opinion.

It all boils down to what kind of software do you want to
run on the laptop?

I have a teeny little Sony Vaio sr21k 600MHZ running Reason,
Recycle, Acid, Soundforge as well as Photoshop, Flash and a
couple of games (although not at the same time) without any
problems at all.

Although, I have to say that Sony customer support is the
worst I have ever seen.

Yeah....the machines are excellent, as long as you don't
need to speak with them! : (

yea but you can grab one used or refurbished for pretty
cheap, i remember seeing refurb ones for about $600.

the thing is - macs have decent internal soundcards - you
can get really low latency and nice sound without having to
buy external hardware... Then it doesn?t hurt THAT much that
the computer is a bit pricier... You get something good for
the money...

offline ecnadniarb on 2003-06-25 09:19 [#00756326]
Points: 24805 Status: Lurker | Show recordbag

There isn't really much of a problem with latency on PC's
providing you are exclusively working in a digital domain,
same goes for sound quality...Mac's were traditionally more
stable than PC's due to the restriction on 3rd party
peripherals, but again this is not much of an issue these
days.

If you are on a budget you get a lot more bang for your
money with a PC.

Yup pcs, especially with the advent of XP pro/2000 on home
machines, have become a lot more stable.
