theres these 2 guys they call themselves Gridlock. Lately they've been holding the standard for awesome music for me. And I thought that since Smojphace sucked so bad, I'd like to all share Gridlocks album "Trace" to tie you over untill a decent afx release comes along. I've been listening to this album for over a year now and its just as good the first time I heard it, and I can listen to it an almost any mood, which is a rarity for most things in my music collection.
I have yet to find an album that tops this one and I've heard a ton of good shit. Jega, AE, µ-ziq, sqpusher, etc, the list goes on. They all have songs that I really hold dear, but their albums just aren't "complete" to me. Trace has been a real album to me. Just perfect in everyway that I would want. Lush ambience, head pounding beats, all hand-rolled into a joint by Jesus as he then hands it to me. So i can smoke it. And boy does it taste good.
Oh yeah, feel free to post your favorite album too :)

i saw solaris (yes I liked it it! :-P ) and was just blown away by the soundtrack. I walked out of the theater, and into a recordstore.
its such an amazing score. chilling and warm at the same time...

is this soundscape as in ambient, or soundscape as in grinding experimental noise?
ambient-wise,
'1194' by Woob (aka. paul frankland, also of Journeyman) is pure genius. has anyone else heard this one? good luck finding a copy though! it's long out of print, though a friend of mine gave me his CD of it, much to my deligh!
also, 'Fires of The Borderlands' by Rapoon (formerly of Zoviet France) is fantastic too - pure ambient bliss!

Interesting you mention that because "Trace" is both ambient and grinding experimental noise!

favorite soundscape album here is Passion by Peter Gabriel... probably my favorite in general too... this album is so visual, yet so emotional... and works so well as an album, yet each song stands on it's own... the closest to perfection among my cds no doubt!

yay! finally someone's picked up on my proposition that MULLET is the new PANTIES as far as an avatar trend. here's hoping more of you will follow! =)
but here's my question: why is it that for all his amazing soundtrack work (passion, birdie), peter gabriel's "proper" albums just don't seem to hold up as a whole - for every good tune like 'red rain' there is always a shite one like 'steam' or worse yet, that one about talkshows from the new one, which just fucking ruins everything! i really think he ought to stick to just churning out beautiful instrumentals instead!

he is better at the instrumentals, and I do not understand why he doesn't stick with it... he's already pretty much shown he doesn't care what is expected of him... as he releases world music albums, and takes 10 years to record albums, etc... so why not just do it all the time, he's so good at it... I do love his voice, but he sings on Passion, it's just without vocals...
and have you heard The Long Walk Home? It's not quite as good as Passion, but still pretty awesome... more subtle I think, yet still has some great ethnic percussion work... and it really draws you into an Australian vibe, as it should as it's music for a movie set there... really similar still to Passion, yet distinct, and it's especially cool that he can make two cds, which are similar and include many of the same people playing on it, yet each cd creates such distinct visual settings, and seem to fit perfectly where they're supposed to fit, i.e. in terms of the movies they're from...

i like gridlocks stuff quite alot. but i wouldn't consider it soundscapes.
i think of a soundscape as more of an ambient structure that creates an image, often with "real" sounds. like all the sounds in a movie, not including the "music".
alot of "idm" though does strive to create an abstract soundscape with artificial sounds, to evoke artificial images.
if you dig gridlock, check out the stuff on dub label, like funckarma, quench, eog. also the neo ouija. the latest deru album would be right up your alley. also lexanculpt. and for that matter, just about everything schematic records does.
