there's a lot of canadians in this board; lucky people, you
don't know what you have in your country; David Cronenberg,
Atom Egoyan, Sarah Polley, Don McKellar, Elias Koteas... and
you give awards to them. When I grow up I want to be a
canadian.
And i know that some of you know Sarah from the highscool.
lucky bsstards :)

i've never come to a conclusion: is sarah blonde or
redhead?
big question for a big board like this.
i am not an obsessive psychotic fan, it's just that i
studied film and i've always dreamt about working with her.
seriously_

who is Sarah Polley?
Also Cronenberg's last movie "Spider" sucked... It was
really beautiful, and it was deep, but there was nothing in
between.
There was nothing that made me want to watch the movie
(there was no driving force in the way the story was told...
sooo slow).
I still watched it, but I was really bored throughout the
movie... Maybe if he had put more music or something (or
different music) in it. I mean most of the time the
maincharacter talked you still couldn't hear what he was
mumbling.

ok I looked Sarah Polley up on imdb...
I still don't think they can make a better "dawn of the
dead"...
The original is really good...

Aw man that's the first I've heard of that project! I agree
that the original will be damn near impossible to top but
WOW a new version wil be cool - hope there's lots of inside
jokes for those of us who have seen the original like 10
times.

hehe yeah...
but why just make a remake of "dawn of the dead"?
make a proper remake of "night of the living dead"... Day of
the dead... I don't see any reason for making a remake
there, it's soo nice with effects and that (also it looks
real good)...

If you didn't check, here's the DOTD remake: http://us.imdb.com/Title?0363547

Spider is one of Cronenberg's best works, but it's not a
movie for everyone.
As a filmmaker I consider David Cronenberg one of my main
influences and a director that deserves better
consideration.
I interviewed him last year when he presented Spider in a
spanish film festival. You can check the video at
http://plasmapool.esmartweb.com/
I recommend Spider and all the other films by Cronenberg to
everyone here (specially Crash, Videodrome and Dead
Ringers), in fact Chris Cunningham and Autechre are big fans
of his work and you can notice it.

and the music in Spider is perfect; Howard Shore is god, the
stuff he composes for Cronenberg is always amazing;

yeah shore is good...
and I'm into all kinds of movies, even experimental ones,
but I felt like I was suffering when watching the movie.
As I feel, it is really deep, and it's really beautiful. But
it had nothing inbetween - and it needs something, because
it is told so slow.
I've heard the novel is great so I shall check that one out
later to.
I shall check the URL...

the movie is slow but i think it's the tempo that is needed,
it's the character's tempo.
i read the novel 1 year before seeing the film and what i
can say is that is not a bad novel, its tone is very
different from the movie's, it's more gothic and not very
naturalistic (the book is spider's journal, but the way
Patrick McGrath has written it is not like the way that
someone who has been 20 years in a mental asylum would have
written it, too baroque and literary, a residual
schizophrenic does not have a clear mind, schizophrenia is a
very destructive illness.

sarah polley is a pretty good actress and better than almost
any other actress thats actually famous.

anyways about cronenberg, existenz (the first cronenberg i
saw)was a pile of shit(it was cool when i was like 12 years
old but its lame) but his newest, spider was incredible, my
god it was good, ralph fiennes was spot on doing the acting,
best acting ive seen in a great while.

I agree, i consider Cronenberg the most exciting directer
out there..Autechre are always goign on about him and
Shore.
Im not sure if the Shore soundtrack to Spider is out, or
even if it was even distributed.

Key_Secret: i think your doing Spider injustice; the film is
not a character study on schizophrenia, its about the
process of it and the afteraffects - so it has to be slow
moving.

I didn't complain on the tempo of the movie, that's not what
I meant... I have no problem with slow movies as long as
there is some kind of driving force that makes me want to
watch the entire movie, when I've watched the begining.

And I didn't feel like "I need to watch this movie to the
end" when I watched Spider. I don't know why...
It might actually have to do with that awful begining of the
movie with music and thoose I-don't-know-the-word-for-them
pictures.
Also there wasn't much to care about in the begining after
the "intro" in my opinion, as the maincharacter was just
walking around mumbling, and you knew nothing about him...
It's the way I experienced the movie, and it's kinda sad the
movie is so slowly told, or else I might have considered
watching it again.
but now the situation is like it is. =/

the begining wasn't awful.
But I knew nothing about what kind of movie it was when my
friend put it on...
so sitting there just waiting for something to happen was
quite boring.

I like not knowing anything when I watch a movie, but in
this case it might actually be good to know the movie is
slow when watching it...

Your synopsis of the film is hesitant and empty.

Also there wasn't much to care about in the begining

Mumbling, groaning and the confusion is the process of
schizophrenia. Don't critise something when its not meant
to go beyond its alledged limitations.

I didn't critise the movie... I wrote in an earlier post
that what can be looked upon objective (like how nice the
photo is, how nice the story is) was good. But the feeling,
the stuff that might make me want to watch the entire movie
wasn't there for me.
Now that is how I experienced the movie, and you can't
critise my experience as it is subjective.
I felt like I had wasted my time watching it.
Also it seems like some of you care maybe too much about the
artist (director).
All that matters for me in this case is the art; the movie
itself.
If you watch a movie, and you know it's made by your fav
director you will think about it differently than if you do
not know who made it (I'm talking about the [subjective]
experience...)
well... I'm not defending myself, what I experienced is what
I experienced.
The only thing that can be critised is the movie itself and
perhaps under what circumstances I watched the movie...
hope you understand what I mean...

now lets move onto another question here... What do you
Cronenberg fans think about "the brood"?

offline ashbrg from Interzone (Spain) on 2003-06-23 13:31 [#00753684]
Points: 104 Status: Addict

the brood is a nice one, although not one of my favourites,
because it uses a lot of the conventions of the horror
genre; but it has some very interesting points, it also
subverts some of those genre conventions, its violence is
very visceral and has some really shocking/interesting
images/scenes/concepts like those killer children (i suppose
Cunningham paid tribute to this film with his aphex children
in the come to daddy video; also there's one image taken
from videodrome, the creature coming out from the tv)
The music, an atonal string quartet by Shore, is again
amazing.

hehe I thought the "children" were dwarfs... atleast that's
what the description said in the tvguide (and my friend who
watched it said the movie was exactely like the
description)...
and the description was crazy! I laughed when I read it...
But I assume there were some symbolism behind it. I'll take
a look at the movie when I get a chance, it does seem
entertaining...

offline ashbrg from Interzone (Spain) on 2003-06-23 13:40 [#00753705]
Points: 104 Status: Addict

the brood is a nice transition between the viral horror to a
more depurated style of movies (scanners and videodrome),
with more interesting characters and plots, going away from
the horror film conventions. The first feature films by
Cronenberg were very low budget films, that could be
considered sexploitation movies by some but that they have
interesting subtext. Those films were like his two first
non-commercial films (the experimental 'Stereo' and 'Crimes
of the future', with lots of sci-fi stuff and a WS Burroughs
flavour) but with some elements (sex, gore) that made them
more accessible to the public, or simply more rentable.

And what i was critizing was your objective synopsis, it was
crap.

like i said "Don't critise something when its not meant to
go beyond its alledged limitations"..whatever subjective
opinions you took from those "limitations" - i really don't
give a shit about.

----------------

Cronenbergs early films are good horror titilation..his
films didn't start to get really good until around '83.

Sarah polley was good in 'Last Night' by the way.

Last Night, directed by Don McKellar. I haven't seen it,
David Cronenberg has also a role in the movie.
I specially like Polley's performance in Atom Egoyan's
Exotica and My Life Without Me. I hav to see No Such Thing
by Hal Hartley.
If you are a Sarah Polley fan, you must see Terry Gilliam's
'The adventures of Baron Munchausen'; this movie shocked me
