who listens to your tunes?

alright, I've been making my glitch tunes for a year and a
half now. Personally, I like them and I like the direction
and growth of late.

The problem is, I don't know who to have listen to them. My
mam's herd them, and she was like, I wish you made songs
with your guitar instead.......

So, I mean, I like them, and I uploaded them onto zebox for
giggles, but I haven't told anyone. so I'm wondering

who listens to your tracks? Who do you tell and how do
those people make you feel?

i dunno but after I finish this EP ive been doing i'm gonnae
concentrate on guitar. I'm getting bored with making
electronica and its high time I display my axe-prowess.

my mother loves my stuff, which is strange. of course, she
usually likes the more melodic stuff, but she did like the
newest thing (soon on teapot's comp), which was pretty
drilly.

alright, but do you just play it for her?

do you have a test audience, or do you not give a shit, up
it to zebox, and tell the whole world?

work. the weird part is, shes usually right. straaaaaange.

sometimes they do. just have to lure them in. say something
like "if you don't listen to this track you will contract
syphillis and go insane" that usually gets em listenin ;)

i listen to anyone who posts their tracks as long as I know
them a little.

I don't want to spam the board with shit though, so I've
kept my pants on still.

How do you get over the idea that people will hate you cuz
you make experiemental music that doesn't appeal to most
people?

My girlfriend insists on purchasing all of my records (my
music was actually the first thing she liked about me, so
it's done me well). And there are a few other people about
who like it...online I know a number of people who are half
interested in my music, at least. I post on
electronicbboard.com, and there are enough people there
interested, so...*shrugs*
Leaves me to wonder how I'm going to shift a thousand copies
of my next album, but I'm sure I'll survive.

dude: you sound a bit paranoid about how people will recieve
your work. if you believe in what you are doing, then you
shouldn't have anything to worry about.

I used to stick my music on mp3.com until I realised that
it's a waste of time if you have your own webspace.

Anyway, I put my stuff on my own website so I guess I'm
telling everybody. There's rarely any feedback, so I assume
they just didn't like it. Personally, that doesn't bother me
because my stuff is very much an acquired taste. Sometimes
though someone will send me an email saying they like it and
that's nice.

offline purlieu from Leeds (United Kingdom) on 2003-06-22 10:20 [#00751570]

Ohhhhh. Well, I'm not all that public. Friends and friends
of friends and such always helps, however I know about three
people who are into electronic music, which doesn't help.
Otherwise, internet internet internet. I push my music on
most forums I'm on, and eventually people get
interested...which is how I managed to score me a record
deal.
I'm currently working on how to do a live show, which I
should be debuting later in the year. That won't be
remotely nerve-wracking atall.

I was going to say, I don't want to come off that way.

I also can't really say how my music compares talent wise,
with other people who haven't been doing this for too long.

I don't want to spam the world before I think I am decently
talented, and I think I am finally getting there. I just
don't know.......

Yeah, this is a good enough place. Like I say, the
internet's probably the same place, because you can target
certain audiences rather than just random people.

my problem with my music is that i dont know if what i hear
is what you hear
the same joy over a glich that lasts a milisecond but took
an hour to devlop
or just repeating a synth riff for 2 mins and that gets a
better response

i feel that way as well. I like what I make, but that's cuz
I'm making it for me, for the mood I'm in.

Sad tracks, mad tracks, whatever, they ........aw fuck it,
I'm gunna post this shit and end all fuck all.

Different tracks for different tastes e.g. I only let my
mother listen to my Trip Hop stuff as she's into R&B, Hip
Hop & comercial shite.....My g/f listens to most of it & I
only let mates listen to stuff which I'm particulary proud
of!

I think your audience needs to have a basic understanding of
a particular style of art to really appriciate a track.

look, i think my stuff is pretty good, and i dont think that
that is me being egotistical. people know if they have
talent or not. i know i do, or i wouldve quit a long time
ago. and even though my stuff is good, when i first posted
stuff up here to total strangers, it freaked me out a bit.
now i really enjoy sharing my work with people. even if they
hate it, i chalk it up to a learning experience.

ok, then I'm stuck in the middle. I like what I make, but I
don't know if there is any talent there.

I'd rather know how to make the music, as enough of it runs
through my head, but I usually can't get it down fast
enough, it kinda sparkles and fades.

it goes too fast! the melodies play out in my head in the
weirdest places.

Like walking home, I'll just start the rhythme, beats and
before you know it, I've got vocals from my poorly tuned
throat and I wish I could jot it all down.......

I'm listening to some of your stuff tibar, and you're right,
you do have talent.

It is unobtrusive, but clear.

well, ive listened to it and ill tell you what... if it were
me, id scrap the beat. you sound liek a guy who has worked
in rock music alot. i dont think thats bad, but the drums
sounded, erm... bad. i would suggest this, this is what i
would do: keep the main bassy keyboards and the pad thing
that comes in every once in a while. add a more lead synth
thing. higher octaves. plinky sounds. you could even do it
on guitar. for the rhythms: just let it flow. dont worry so
much about holding it down and really forcing that beat.
thats a very rock archetype. write tiny rhythms that come
together like fingers laced. thats just me. liek i said,
practice. dont be afraid to try new things. i hope this isnt
discouraging to you, it shouldnt be.

have it!

im not easily upset by critics, ive never cared :) my mates
appreciation is more than enough.. if when i play live, one
or two people come up and say they dug it.. then i get
ecstatic

well, I want to thank you for your opinion first off.

but I really think it's funny you mentioned that, as the
beat I wanted was so much more simple, but I forgot it, and
had to just through that in there.

that's what I mean, I forget what I'm doing and well, yeah.

ok, I'm going to take your advice and go headlong into the
flames. Thank you very much for the encouragment at least,
I'll see what I can do.

hey, echo: do it. im serious. with something like music, you
have to give it your all, or forget it. people who are only
half-hearted about it, it shows. seriously, it comes out in
the music. and ESPECIALLY electronic. listen to
squarepusher. even if you hate his stuff, you can tell my
man pours EVERYTHING into it. he goes nuts on his stuff. be
that. even if its an ambient piece, pour everything you got
into taking that piece of music to that very place. rip a
hole in the dimensional fabric. make it feel liek you are
REALLY THERE, wherever that is.

that I need to acknowledge that I CAN make music, but I need
to work to make GOOD music.

that's an interesting thought, one I need to sleep on.

play it for everyone. post it on the internet like i dio
(shameless plug: http://goodhandsteam.iuma.com). especially
if your not concerned with making money or record deals blah
blah blah. but i think music is to be listened to rather
than bought/sold. if you make them free and
downloadable...people will genreally listen. ive been able
to remix stuff from all over the planet because of that.
