APHEX AT SONAR

he came on at about 5 am (if i remember right) after
oxide&neutrino (who sucked!)...i really needed someone for
putting me into right mood for aphex, but all i could listen
was just techno crap (now, if you like techno you'd probably
like it...mark bell, and richie hawtin were playing just
before aphex...then there were dj vadim and dj krush-too
downtempo to get me in the mood, the only one that was kind
of close to what i was looking for was thomas
raumschmiere).
anyway, aphex came on and played an nice ambient tune...i
was hoping for some hardcore music tho...then i was
shocked!!! after listening to techno (tup tup tup) all
evening aphex goes and plays some more - i was totally
depressed (really) he was playing that techno and some
electro for half an hour and i was really in pain...but
then...he played a track from drukqs (don't know the titles,
but it was a hardcore one) after that another track - i
think track nr.6 from drukqs disc1 (the track with deep bass
sound the whole time)...afther that it was all pure BLISS -
more than an hour of really hardcore jungle, with ocasional
noise and very fast and hardcore beats (mad stuff) - it
seemed like its never going to end - and i was totally
wasted after he finished - i'd probably have an hart attack
if he played some more
im not sure why he played that techno on begining (which was
great-but not something to get mental by)...could be to tire
those techno likers hehe

BJORK
not my thing...clearly lot of people came because of her,
but that is just not the right place for her music IMO
MARK BELL
played some nice track towards the end...otherwise quite
boring (techno beat is just not my thing)
RICHIE HAWTIN
all sounds the same to me...
T. RAUMSCHMIERE
nice stuff+he's really enjoying himself while playing - he
played music a lot alike bogdan raczynski + he was jumping
all over the place (just like bogdan) even on his decks - i
liked him a lot!
DJ VADIM
nice hip hop...nothing that hasnt been heard before on his
records...
DJ KRUSH
hip hop, trip hop-i liked him better than
vadim...technically he's really great, would definitely go
and see him again
OXIDE&NEUTRINO
crap...boring garage? or 2step or whatever they call it-they
were trying to fire up the crowd but they failed to do
so...
SIR DUPERMANN+JAZZKAMMER
i loved this...it was deep bass sounds + noise + occasional
beats, well wicked!
KIM HIORTHOY
pretty uptempo stuff-great beats + melodies (the only thing
i disliked was that synth sound that he often used)...and he
really put the crowd on its feet...great guy + he was going
mental as well :)
RUSSELL HASWELL
he was awesome!!! mostly white noise...some wicked beats and
electro + a death metal tune at the end (did he reales any
records? i really need to get some of his stuff)...there was
this guy (anyone from this mb? keyfumbler perhaps? hehe)
that was standing right infront of the speakers and was
clearly enjoying himself-i wish i had a camera...i just love
this guys who totally get into music!
AKUFEN
i thought he would show something since he's a pretty famous
name and media speaks high of him, but it was totally
disappointing...like listening to his record
TIM HECKER
i love his music!!!
this is surely my favourite ambient music (it was biosphere
until i found out about hecker)...totally apropriate music
to close the day
+MANY OTHERS
that didnt get my attention...

overall impression...i was very pleased

any other people went there?

brilliant. absolutely brilliant - dfinately the best
festival i have been to. you spaniards really know how to
throw a party and have a good time.

APHEX: A really different set, and i disagree with
Tolstoyed in that it was a boring start to the set. it was
completely in with the spirit of the music elsewhere and
wouldn't immediately alienate all the people that had come
in to see what he could do, so in that way he enticed them
in with some top notch techno. the best moment came when he
dropped "every day" and completely fucked about with it with
his laptop. genius. the end i was really disappointed in,
the jungle never really got going like his ATP or dedbeat
sets and then finished with some nosebleed gabba which
forced me and the people i was with to leave. at 6 am it
was just a bit too hectic.

BJORK:
sound was awful and you really couldn't get a feel for the
music - the crowd really enjoyed in though, just not my
thing at the end of it.

HAWTIN:
brilliant set, best one i've heard him do - pounding techno
with some fantastic minimal moments and breakdowns. what
has he done to his hair though?

JEFF MILLS:

highlight of the festival - fantastic from start to finish.
reinforced why he is one of the best djs in the world. a
good mix of music, all of which was good. i need this set
from soulseek or somewhere.

MARK BELL:
ok generally, played a good set but using cds to dj with!!?
- perhaps i'm just old fashioned?

HELL:
not a bad set, but could have really torn it up at points
and didn't use the opportunities he had to his full
advantage.

CHRIST:
great live set, this guy is completely underrated and needs
more exposure. you can tell the BoC connection when you
see/hear him. excellent stuff.

Jamie Lidell was really great!!
One of the best things I've seen at Sonar

Sonar by night was cool too, but the location really sucked!
It was just like
another stupid MEGA RAVE :-(

well, you need a big place for this many people so i guess
it cant look any other way...

lizardfister-you really should've waited till the end of
aphex it was mad...

another thing - i really cant imagine how can aphex be
standing so still during his performances...it must be hard
to control yourself not to move

i didn't think the venue was that bad, effectively it WAS a
mega rave. the sound for bjork were terrible which i put
down to the acoustics of the venue but once she went off the
sound improved - so i have no complaints there. the outside
bit was good i thought.

tolstoyed - maybe i should have stayed then. i was tailing
off by that time though ;) - i'll wait until i get the set
off soulseek or something before being so rash.

i went to sonar too, flew down on wednesday night with big
plans to be at thewrongfestival for donna summer/hrvatski
then dj rupture, and then be at sonar the whole time.
yeah, it didn't go quite to plan.... didn't really organize
or pace myself well. . .
by friday night i was absolutely exhausted, so missed most
of björk, then waited for aphex through heaps of shit oxide
and neutrino, right up the front, watching aphex set up....
but as soon as he started i left! ... had a friend waiting
outside, and the stuff he played at first did nothing for my
blisters-on-feet. yeah....
but highlights were Hellfish on thursday evening. i didn't
know what to expect, hadn't really got into the tracks i'd
heard, but live he was great! He had real class~
Tujiko Noriko was also new for me, and i still don't know
what to make of her. which means i was impressed anyway, i
think. . .
yeah, and jamie lidell was pretty funny for a while, but i
didn't stay til the end. he was a bit too aggressive in my
opinion.........
Barcelona was a great change from Zurich for a few days!
Sooooooo fucking hot though... and yeah, i should've
realized that there are always heaps of peeps at
festivals....
otherwise it was great! i'd do it all again~

oh, and i didn't spend too much time but saw a few of the
exhibitions in the sonarcomplex place, aswell as some music
making robots. that was a nice break from the crowds
outside.

did anyone notice that cleaning lady that totally loved
russell haswell music?
she was there pretending to clean...but if you looked better
it was obvious that she's there because of the good
music...i mean she was standing in front of the speaker for
the whole time...catching the rhythm

OLA!!!!
Just back...... my fuckface freinds!

Highlights:
HELLFISH .. pure gabba heaven like Aphex at
sonar2001 with lots of physical presence and i got a fucking
12" he threw at the crowd at the end. BANGING!

TIM HECKER amazing trippy soundscapes. Best
beatless ambient noise i´ve ever heard! Helped by the
chilled out under-the-sun vibe.

CHRIST ...... amazing, IDM with seriously cool
sound from this BoC connected scotsman. Out there and on my
top ten next purchases/download lists

PHOENECIA
Top class glitch. absolutely A-1 sounds from these chaps.
You want laptop driven journey music from the future? this
is them... Autechre from the US of A? probably!

APHEX TWIN
40 mins of boring techno folowed by his poorest set yet. (i
been to 7) He did play 2 Druqs tracks and some
oldskool Caustic window stuff followed by jungle and some
warped pop songs but it just wasn´t aphexy enough for me!
He has mixed and warped a million times better in the past.
I do conced though that the techno set he did beat the hell
out of all the other techno played that weekend and it was a
user-freindly set all round.... but for me thats not good!

I bet when i download this set and listen to it again i´ll
love it though!

JAMIE LIDELL
Amazing! constructed breakbeat songs entirely from his own
lopped vocals live . what a showman! Like Marc
Boland meets Kid606. Excellent

I missed fucking TONS!!!!!

Richard was brilliant, as far as I'm concerned. The
Techno/Acid part of the show was extremely well chosen and
mixed, the Jungle bits were massive and the
Gabber/Mashup/whatever part was blistering.

my full report to be found here:

http://hideout.l0calhost.la, in the Gossip Forum.

Ran into him the next day but was so starstruck that I only
managed to stutter a few sentences. But he was really nice
and had this "Talk to me mate, I won't bite" look in his
eyes. And the pictures I took of him during the day were
stolen along with my camera. Sigh. Thankfully I have
witnesses, otherwise I wouldn't believe I talked to him
either :)
