tell me if this is wrong!

I got back my letter today which I had to write in english
class and I was expecting an A, because english is just too
easy!
But It turns out I had one thing incorrect and I stongly
believe that it isn't.

"....the council will cut down a large number of beautiful
trees at the place where the supermarket will be built."

Now, the 'at' must be 'on' according to my teacher, but I've
always thought that it was 'at'. So uhm, who's right or are
both or and at correct?

it's "i believe strongly" you've split your infinitive.

It's not an infinitive, though.

"at" is fine. Go punch your stupid teacher.

So, you didn't get an A because of this one preposition?

the grammer seems technically correct, but it is awkward.

"....the council is set to cut down a large number of trees
at the site of where the supermarket will/would be built."

It's born out of cyncism which seems to be the prevailing
attitude amongst coppers. Probably because they assume
everyone is a liar and a thief after dealing with them all
day long. Perhaps also it's to reinforce the "who is in
control" aspect of them pulling you over- you become aware
that if you're sarcastic back, or complain about their
sarcasm, they'll be harder on you and maybe even set about
finding something wrong with your car to justify booking
you.

Sorry, should read "cynicism" in the previous post...

Yes, English teachers seem to disapprove of using "/"s
unless it's in "either/or".

Perhaps, "The council is intent on cutting down a large
quantity of trees, because the land would be ideal for
development. Perhaps for a supermarket or cinema comple."
would work better?

"There's nothing that upsets the police more than sarcasm --
not even crime. Rodney King was sarcastic to the police,
look what happened to him."

"You mustn't be honest with the police... It confuses them."
