In the near future I'm going to buy myself a new PC. I'm
going to buy all the parts and them make them into a whole.
One of the most important things for me right now is the
ability to make music on my new one. So, can anyone here
recommend me a soundcard that is real good? I want to be
able to record stuff (instruments, or just sounds that I
recorded) to my computer in a good quality and all that, and
as I'm not too much of an expert I was wondering what the
good stuff is...

... wish i could help, and u'd think i'd be knowledgeable
considering i'm currently using 4 sound cards at once on my
current p.o.s. but the best advice i can give is to search
out musicians friend, maybe hitsquad, and then start asking
more specific questions about cards on sites like this, but
who knows, u might get some advice here...

I've always bought Creative Labs sound cards.

jedi chris, Creative's soundcard is good for multimedia
stuff, like games. But it's not really spesificly designed
for music making

My tracker used to hate my Blaster Live and I avoid Creative
at all times now. I'm sick of those guys making total wank.
:)

I like my M-audio 24/96 - crystal clear sound, absolutely
no hum, quality analog and digital in/out - but some folks
have trouble with them if they have a particular Via chipset
on their motherboards. More info here.

I think some of the terratec cards also have the delta
chipset but I haven't heard of them having the same
problems... I also hear that Hoontech cards are very good.

I've got the latency in Cubase down to 11 ms - any lower and
I get a pop now and then. 11 ms is pretty good IMHO. I don't
notice the delay.

If you want to build a serious music workstation, don't
count on using it as a general purpose computer. The less
hardware and software you install, the better. Even go so
far as to deactivate any onboard devices on the motherboard
you aren't using.

Are you sure you wouldn't prefer some wax paper and a comb?
:-)

That is, deactivate them in the bios.

It's not the sole purpose of the pc to make music. I'll need
it for school and all that, but as I'm going to record and
mess around with sounds I might as well try to get some
relatively good stuff.

Thanx for all the replies.
