wow, adverts here in the UK are reaching an all-time low in
general - I admit that there are still advertising campaigns
which show genuine wit and imagination (the recent Irn Bru
one comes to mind), but in general it seems we're being
bombarded almost constantly with heavy-handed attempts at
mantric brainwashing: sexuality, gender enforcement, and
even racial stereotyping. Examples of each:

01) well, the sexuality thing is so rampant that individual
examples are barely called for - they all seem to imply that
the world is made up of sexy heterosexuals who are made all
the more sexier by using certain branded products - from
shampoo, deodorant, cars, food &tc. This type of advertising
seems to aimed at the younger folks, footloose and oh so
fancy free, working their way up the class ladder.

02. Now we have adverts for mainly domestic products such as
washing up liquid, bleach, vacuum cleaners, &tc - you'll
notice that still it's almost exclusively seen as the
woman's job to be the household's cleaner and servant. Or
else they'll put that slant on it ('going for that New Woman
Dollar!') which will employ either role-reversal, or the
age-old cliché of the woman secretly wearing the trousers
by belittling the 'pathetic little man'.

03. finally, and this worries me a lot, is Racial
Stereotyping - I'm thinking specifically about the new KFC
advert, for GREASY CHICKEN, which sloganises as 'SOUL FOOD'
and revolves mainly around fabricated scenes of 'Black
Culture', with the occasional nigga-lover cracker throwback
to 40's Harlem. Even Sam L. Jackson voiced-over for them..
fuck that shit!

Yep I agree, everything now is either a play on race or
sex...and it is all dull and boring. The only commercials
that has given me a chuckle recently is the Toyota one where
the window cleaner ladder falls away.

Ha ha, yes I saw that advert and nearly pissed myself. I
wondered if KFC were actually horribly rascist and it was an
effort on their part to try to get black people to boycott
them :)

On the subject of good adverts, I think the Gamecube adverts
were pretty good and the new Honda Accord one too.

Yes, the old "You're stupid if you don't buy it" ones... I
really question the intelligence of people who fall for
that.

Like the package holiday one (lunpoly perhaps?) where they
make out the guy who makes his own holiday instead of using
their package ones must be stupid and pays over the odds...
well, that's exactly what I do and it typically saves me at
least £100 and allows me to stay at a hotel that isn't full
of lager drinking British males in their mid 20s. Pretty
stupid on my part, oh yes >:|

because advertisers figure that by putting the music of a
somewhat cult and still-underground (to the mainstream)
figure, they will somehow gain 'respect' and 'credibility'
for their goods. And because music should not be there to be
whored - it is a gift, not a commodity.

that's the mantric nature of advertising unfortunately, A_P.
My own technique is to say 'fuck off' to the t.v. after
every advert. Fortunately, the quality of shows on channels
1 thru 4 is so bad that I rarely watch t.v., preferring to
read or listen to/compose music

a thing that really irritates me about recent forms of
advertising is the mythologization of youth and youth
culture - this kind of falls in your first category although
a heavy dose of pretentiousness comes into play too.

for example: that godawful Pepsi Energy add - you know, all
the people 'raving' (arghh) in some desert who then have to
outrun the upcoming sun (because for some reason it HAS to
be dark to 'rave').

its just music dude dont be so precious!
people are too precious with art...

alnuit: no neither, Ive seen a couple of the cremaster films
that have come here though, mindblowing, and he puts out
really good books too, big glossy jobs with lots of
pictures
Id have so had a baby to him if I was Bjork

so because it's only music and not 'precious', it's OK to
use it as a commodity and make money selling it to some
soulless corporation out to trade on greed, envy and
self-esteem? Thanks, I'll remember that next time someone
slaves over creating a sonic expression of their soul.

no Im not saying its not "precious" cos its music, Im saying
people are too precious about art as a whole, and if richard
so decides to make some dollars seeing it to soulless
corporation out to trade on greed, envy and
self-esteem, its his decision to do so and who are we to
pass judgement and does this somehow affect the quality of
what he produces?

*doesnt think so*

I believe that he has a responsibility to his self and to
the world - Music/Art is the child of creation. It should
not be sold into metaphorical slavery. By selling into this
fake cynical manipulative section of society, he is a
traitor to his music, to his real fans, and to the world.

I dont see a problem...

if a person puts there soul into it, its a great track...
its not like they were commisioned to write that track for
tv... it was already made, and by someone using it in a TV
commerical in no way lessens the legitness of the track. If
anything, good for the artist for making a track that people
actually would pay money for.

Its not easy making a living as a musician. You take the
money you can get. As long as you arnt changing the music
itself to make money.

And yes, I know aphex has a lot of money... but I dont think
its enough to live off of for the rest of his life. I dont
think hes THAT rich. The dude has no other job, so he has to
be savy with how he makes his money.

I used to agree with you... but ive learned there is much
more to life then just principles... to slag someone off for
trying to make a living, is just as close minded and
ignorant as the people who think IDM is just noise.

I agree with you in spirit, but what of people that need
that money? And why do you feel that just because Aphex is
true to the way he makes his music, he is anti-capitalist
and anti-advertising. Infact, I am quite sure he sees the
whole thing as a big fat joke. A big fath joke that is
feeding his bank balance albeit.

As someone pointed out on this MB... having Aphex's
windowlicker as a BMW car commercial is a stupid thing
because the song is demented and crazy (I think it was
Ophecks). It is as stupid as chosing a borderline suicide
case like Beth Gibbons singing 'Glory Box', which got used
in that ultimate celebration of youth, Levi's ad. Aphex
couldn't care a rat's ass about the whole thing I am sure,
as he is prolly laughing his way to the bank(his home).

I do agree with your general qualms with most advertising
though. It feeds racial and sexual stereotypes and does no
one any good, except by way of feeding the capitalistic
structure that sustains it.

listening to the song by itself.
