what language do they use to write their software?

what are some good, free/semi-free programs for music that i
can download?

Mac or PC?

Lisp is a very popular programming language... I'm taking a
class this summer on algorithmic music

i'm a computer science major, so i've had a few of the
popular languages... i'm not good enough to know how to
manipulate sounds with code

i havnt heard that they make their own programs...

but I do know they use Max/MSP, which basicially lets you
build your own instruments...

There are some of these kinds of software that allows you to
put together componenets like LFO's and Oscillators and
envelope generators and user defined filters and route
signals from one to the other, thereby making your own
custom synths. I am guessing that Ae use something of that
sort rather than actually code per se. More like putting a
filter together in Matlab.

Actually, I wonder if anyone would consider using Matlab
itself to implement their synths...I mean, it is fucking
powerful after all...and the whole things is as easy as a b
c. I wonder if it will give good results. Has anyone here
tried it already?

Specifying... Lisp is the preferred programming language for
music manipulation. When I get some links and some
experience with it and various programs I will put up some
links and some tutorials for everyone so you guys can
experiment

I use PC, and it's a lot less accessable than a Mac. There
are several libraries for Lisp that are written for mac with
a decent graphical/text interface, Max is one of the better
known ones definitly

Two others that haven't been mentioned are Open Music and
Common Music, although I don't have links right now

Native Instruments Reaktor can also be programmed pretty
well, but it's an incredibly high learning curve to get
something halfway decent... I haven't dived into that one
yet, but it's definitly one of the things on my list

yeah, max/msp, and
Supercollider (www.audiosynth.com)
and apparrently something called Symbollic Composer aswell
which i am trying to find the brainpower to get into at the
moment.

Matlab is not realtime environement unlike MAX/MSP or
Supercollider. And you need a good dose of signal
theory/synthesis if you want to get something out of it.

i know they r using curtis roads software:

search for 'curtis roads' website

he's the guy that created granular synth, and pulsar synth,
theres free progs on his website, i cudnt try them out as
they r for mac...

both PulsarGenerator and CloudGenerator were made with
supercollider. curtis roads is the daddy.
