i don't like malcom x. he talked about the holocaust like it was nothing and got mad that people thought it was a bigger deal than slavery.

well, more people died as a result of slavery. He also recanted a lot of his earlier, rasher statements in the last 2 years of his life.

Well, for a start, he stepped away from anti-white racism and started talking more about integration. you should read his autobiography - it's an eye-opener.

the autobiography is good for putting his life into perspective -- from his early hustling days to his conversion into a somewhat fundamentalist idea of Islam to his travels which tempered his more extremist aspects shortly before his death.

"You're not supposed to be so blind with patriotism that you can't face reality. Wrong is wrong no matter who does it or who says it."

yea i have his autobio w/ haley forward, been meaning to read it for some years. did you like the spike lee
joint film with denzel washington? i really enjoyed that, it adds some perspective to some of the studies i've read..
this one great sociology book i've read by jack katz uses malcolm x as a negative example a lot.. clearly a personal vendetta (anti-muslim sentiment, racism, etc.). he uses him w/o any deference to his political beliefs, just references various crimes he comitted in context of chapters about normal murderers, robbers, etc. pretty disrespectful and one of the few downfalls of a mostly fantastic book on crime.

I admit to not having see the film yet, despite being a major fan of spike lee and denzel :) But I'm gonna buy it once I've finished the autobiography :) The intro, by Haley is really good too :)
