Saw it for the first time last night.

Hmmm.... a bit shit i thought. Defo over-rated anyway. Now i
know the guy was supposed to have no personality and be some
sort of souless all-consuming type dude, but i just didn´t
buy it....he was tpp blank and while i appreciate unresolved
endings in films.... this was just lame.. plus the direction
was a bit lame and tv-movie-ish. Ultimately an unmemerable
film.

I thought it was really good, cracked me up quite a bit. I
think it's more of an allegory (sp?) than a straight psycho
flick.

I thought it was a very good film although it doesn't
compare favourably to the book ( as always ). I thought
Christian Bale excelled as Bateman and the direction wasn't
so flashy as to distract from the story. As a scathing
indictment on 80's american capiltalism, I feel it
definitely succeeded and there are many scenes in the film
that i return to time and time again.

offline jonesy from Lisboa (Portugal) on 2003-05-19 06:00 [#00705062]

Unless you had a Bateman narrative over the film you
couldn't really succeed in getting across the psyche of
these yuppies. That's where the book excels.

Nothing really shocking in it though was there? I mean ok
the film operated on a different level than the book by
deliberately shying away from the violence, but it meant it
was less of an adaption, more an interpretation of the book.
Cleverly done, but not really 'American Psycho'. And the
suggestive ending is fucking stupid!

offline KEYFUMBLER from DUBLIN (Ireland) on 2003-05-19 07:45 [#00705200]
Points: 5696 Status: Lurker

Yep.. the sugesstive ending was crappy. As well as all that,
i got a tad confused at the end. I mean.... did
Bateman kill anyone or was it all in his cold head or
does it even matter? in the end i didn´t really care ....
it didn´t really show why the 80´s was "cold"...
just tha, from one point of view, it was. Big swing!

They took something which was extremely prominent in the
book - basically nobody knows who anyone else is apart from
Bateman, who religiously keeps tabs on his fellow collegues
- and bent it a bit to give it a surprise ending. In the
book you just pass it off because his lawyer is always
confusing people with someone else, and besides there are
too many repercusions due to Bateman's actions for it to be
all in his head. And because they changed it for the film,
the part where he goes to Paul Owen's apartment makes no
sense. Neither does this post probably but never mind.

sounds like the book has it all, and they basically fucked
up with the screenplay.
Im not saying i need to be sponfed every detail and i enjoy
abstract, surreal stuff but, that film sucked ass.
Thanks for the insights.

The ending was exactly the same as the book. the whole "my
confession has been for nothing" with the "this is not an
exit " sign above him. Identical. The only bit in the film
that slightly jars is his diary keeping and the discovery of
this. This was obviously introduced to create a sort of
moral judgement on his actions. We were left with the
feeling that his actions would not go unpunished.

Apart from that, I found the film to be a rather faithful
retelling of the book.

And the confession to his lawyer IS the climax to the book.
The whole story has been leading up to that point. Were you
too busy drooling over the pornographic violence to
notice??

offline KEYFUMBLER from DUBLIN (Ireland) on 2003-05-19 08:24 [#00705255]
Points: 5696 Status: Lurker

yeah... the pornographic violence, i.e a couple of hookers
get slashed slightly, really turned me on - it sooo got in
the way of the smooth narative. Me arse. It was a hokey
atampt at creating a "gratuitous yet intelligent" piece of
social observance based on a popular book. FAILED.

Hey man, i was referring to jarworski's comments - not
yours.

But while we're on the subject - you're talking shite.

Erm... no.

The ending of the book indeed has him confessing to his
lawyer - followed by the taxi journey ("He's looking at me
like I'm some kind of viper") and then him and the crew
going out on the piss again - but the voiceover "This
confession has meant nothing" occurs about halfway through
the book, I don't think it's even referring to the phone
call he made.

There is no climax to the book, it deliberately tails
off, just like all his other books with the exception of
Glamorama. The point is these people learn nothing. Or were
you too busy pontificating to notice?

By the way if anyone wants to go and read Glamorama (great
book, some excellent writing, sex scenes and a Bateman
cameo) and tell me what the fuck the ending is all about
then I'd be very happy. Ta.

I thought that the film was awful. It made no sense, and the
whole thing about the guy listening to music as he killed
was obviously a rip off of Mr. Blonde in Reservoir Dogs. The
movie was shit.

I had a friend who said he loved the movie and found it very
profound, and that the main character reminded him of
himself... scary. 0_o' I didnt realize just HOW scary (and
stupid) he was until I saw the movie.

Worst movie I've ever seen--without doubt!

I hated it! The central character had no goal. So the plot
was full of holes, because he stood to gain nothing. And if
he's crazy--so what? What's with all the excersize and
things? and why Huey Lewis?

Prior to having seen this P.O.S. film, i thought it was
impossible to have a movie without characters, but this was
pretyt damn close!

American Psycho kicks ass

well casted.. and the satire of the 80's is hilarious. the
book is extremely gory, much worse then the movie, but if
you watch it a few times and get into the whole did it
happen or not theme it can get pretty interesting

What's the plot? What is the character's goal? Why does he
do these things? BORING!

the make-up in the movie is so well-done.

when bateman is being questioned/grilled, it always looks

so many great one-liners. they are repeated almost daily.
