I am making a mix for a good friend who has never really
been into electronic moooosic. what tracks can I put on
there to ease him into the gorgeous world of IDM?

i'd go with some easy listening electronica, like "on the
romance tip" or "aquarius" ...

Idioteque is not IDM, I will never accept any of that
album as IDM.

of IDM" .

Windowlicker
It was Richard's attempt to get a number 1 on the British
pop charts anyways.

play him Slip by Autechre... I got a friend of mine to
listen to that, a friend who thinks I have weird music
tastes... he said it was cool...

heh, I also played him 777 and he said something about it
being mathematical or something I think... good study music
or something...

I'd say some Boards of Canada would be good... some Come to
Daddy or ICBYD Aphex Twin... like Flim, or Alberto
Balsalm... Lots of early Autechre, but also give him some
more accessible later Autechre... something like Corc, Rae,
or even something from Confield or Draft 7.30 like Vi Scose
Poise or V-Proc... I also agree with supreme about Kid A or
Amnesiac era Radiohead... I think Pulk/Pull Revoling Doors
is a great song... Packt Like Sardines in a Can is too...
and the song Kid A is real nice...

I think BoC should do the trick. I have played it to
friends, to parents, to collegues, to Brian Adams
fans...they have all loved BoC. It trully trancends borders,
man. Peace!

I have a friend who's not a big fan of this style of music.
I thought Suarepushers 'My Red Hot Car' might have been a
good intro, but he didn't go for it.

He did, however, enjoy Global Goon's Vatican Nitez album.
BoC's 'In A Beautiful Place Out In the Country'. And most of
Aphex Twin's ICBYD.

IDM is a wanky pretentious name. i mean really
Intelligent Dance Music. How self-serving can a term
be? bile puke vomit etc etc

Any term is stupid cos it's so damn broad. How can you group
BOC,Autechre and Squarepusher together?

I'm with you, bird. I hate the term "IDM," it definitely is
way too limited and inadequate for such a vast and untamed
world of music. braindance I like, that's kinda zippy
oh and I think you're too right, zyx! BoC is music everybody
can feel...and should

oh and Phresch: he's into a lot of good indie stuff, like
the microphones and built to spill and neutral milk hotel.
he's also fond of tori amos and beck
