The death of the record-industry obviously.
Hopefully not the end of good music

don't hold your breath on music still being good when the
industry falls apart.

music ain't supposed to be free... you should've worded it
like this...

"With everyone stealing so much good music via the net, what
is the future?"

"don't hold your breath on music still being good when
the industry falls apart.
"

I know :-(
But with a whole new generation growing up with "free"
music... the music industry can only go on for so long until
no cd's are being sold at all anymore. I fear for what will
happen after that.

I think pop music for sure will always be there. They'll
figure out someway of sorting out the mp3 situation. Besides
Pop music is more about celebrity and mass recognition, than
music. I think for the small records labels and quality
electronic music, the game is up. I just can't see a way
forward for them. I think the future for them is very bleak.
Vinyl will go, CDs will go and the future is basically just
mp3. Kids of the future will say to people like us 'what you
use to buy a big bit of plastic or chunk of metal to listen
to music, ha ha ha?'.

The_Funkmaster,

My point wasn't about people stealing music. My point was as
I made it.

We'll find out in two or three years won't we?If it lasts
that long.

For a start, ban all cd burners.

This is the future we just have to get use to it. Besides
who cares really? Life goes on. The internet was a big shock
when it came into people's life, but they got use to it.
Same with mp3 really, big shock too but people get use to
it.

You know, there are a lot of good non-profit bands out
there.

Yeah i'm sure we'll survive without a music industry and no
music.

I smell sarcasm.

Or so they make us think.

Well maybe the ones you know...

I know a lot of musicians who make music for the art and
make shit cash. They'll always be music, good music besides
big record companies little products.

offline promo from United Kingdom on 2003-05-14 14:41 [#00698075]

Yeah I think we will survive. I mean I've heard enough good
music and bought enough good music over the years to be
pretty satisfied. Its a shame things have gone the way they
have I suppose but no I don't think I'll loose any sleep
over it.

i would hope that people who enjoyed the music would support
the artists they like and continue to buy that stuff.

record labels weed out the shit. you would get bored fast
having to waste hours and hours doing that if it werent for
them. they wont go away.

stealing music from small/indie artists only hurts the
artists, not the labels. the labels dont make enough to be
hurt to begin with. one will fold and another will come
along. the real victims are the artists and the listeners.

I was talking about the free downloads on the internet, on
artists sites.

I seriously think those musicians at the pissant level
really ought to grow up if they expect to make money out of
what they do. It should be fun chiefly, people who are
trying to make money out of it are just sad. They ought to
actually attempt to make money from something that you can
actually make money at, instead of living in a fantasy land!

offline corrupted-girl on 2003-05-14 14:55 [#00698105]

Yea. I hate it. I think it's ridiculius. That whole
industry. They get paid millions of dollars. Just like
proffessional sports players. That money could be going to
better use... raising pay for school teachers and nurses,
focusing on education and good carrers... not Hollywood
image and basketball. It's ridiculous.

offline promo from United Kingdom on 2003-05-14 15:30 [#00698167]

Mmm, you kinda put a lot of words in my mouth
corrupted-girl. I didn't say any of that. I said people
trying to make money at the pissant level. The pissant level
means the sort of people who are selling maybe 50cds or
whatever. And no I don't resent the industry making
millions, I'm not a socialist.

easy answer! the musicians we all listen to (besides the
ones who make millions of dollars) have to get day jobs and
can only release an album every 2 or 3 years because
assholes like "us" (you, really) won't pay $12 for an album.

i download loads of music, and still by loads of vinal, that
IS NOT gonna stop for me... there is a diffrernce betwix
compressed DIGITAL files and clean groove ridden vinal. i
have not one mp3 that will replace the value of my 12in
collection... as for the industry going down, people are
just jumping on a slippery slope about the whole thing...
people THOUGHT that telephone calls and the mail service
were gonna fade into the nothing after email became thee
norm and sorts, but hey we still fuck with those now don't
we... anyone of you ever walk into a major record store to
find one person browsing the racks??? i don't think sooo....
everyweekend the amoeba's rasputins, virgins, towers around
the world are packed with people buying...guess what,
music... take a good look, the next time you at one... these
people don't have pangs of regert over buying the latest
whatever...

tisk...

no one's arguing with that, there will always be responsible
fans like you, myself, and hundreds of others on this board.
but music sales are declining, including and perhaps
especially in indie genres. you may find people in stores,
but if you did the math you'll find less stores than 2 years
ago, especially independent stores. that's the global trend
anyway, not necessarily true in every case.
