Why is John Peel so cool?

How many DJ's do you knowwho can gain such world wide
appreciation and acceptance from such a wide range of
musical genres?

Obviously his ties to Liverpool will have a hell of a lot to
do with it but there must be other stuff as well...please
use your brains to enlighten me

But he is the one who made it his job...so cool that
established artists just send him remixes and original
tracks for him to play on his show. I wish I was John Peels
ears.

i wish i knew how he made it - i guess he was lucky, he
probably started playing decent music (not only popular) and
artists that dont get much attention otherwise started to
contact him...his life must be totally devoted to music
tho-imagine how many records must he listen to...

+ 22 actually :)

I'm not a fan of the indie rock he plays a lot of, but
that's tempered by his broad taste of different styles. He
certainly doesn't fall into the trap a lot of DJs do of once
they hit the big time they "play it safe" and play well
liked stuff to avoid falling off the gravy train.

The only reason I've heard of him is because of autechre's
peel sessions. Their route through him doesn't exactly make
him cool... I mean... they chose THIS site for a remix
competition. I rest my case.

How cool would that be? I reckon he'd get you really good
albums for xmas and birthdays rather than the usual
socks/books etc. grandparents tend to go for. Trips to his
house would be sweet too, "Grandad, can I listen to your
unreleased IDM peel sessions?"

I like him a lot... when I first listened to his show (many
years ago) it helped me get into lots of stuff. The first
time I heard Eazy-E was on Peel! also...

Death Metal, hardcore, techno etc... so much stuff which at
the time no-one was playing on the radio.

offline diablo on 2003-05-12 03:15 [#00695116]

...and it's funny how he still makes loads of mistakes, like
playing the wrong tunes, the wrong speed and generally being
well sketchy!

It's wicked how he doesn't notice for ages that it's at the
wrong speed or wrong track, etc. I remember one time he
played something at 45 instead of 33, stopped it, pointed
out his mistake, played it on at the correct speed, then
decided he prefered it at 45 so put the speed back up. All
without restarting the track. Genius.

i saw him DJ at Sonar, 2001. everything from Nolan sisters
to kid606 ....and it worked!

Peeley was at the scene when Lee Harvey Oswald was
assassinated! He was a DJ at a Dallas radio station.

Interesting but not really usefull information.

he is a god.
no-one has had a more direct impact on my musical tastes
than peel, when i was a teenager i found so much cool music
that was out there and i never knew about. i have him to
thank for that.

i was lucky enough to spend a evening in the maida vale
studio with a few others watching luke slater do a live
session a few ago. john peel was fast asleep in the corner
when we came into the studio 5 minutes before the show
started! how cool is that?

John Peel has even had my gran singing along in the car when
he played Geraldo.

He followed that with something like Anal Cunt which my gran
was less impressed with O_o

have you never heard of the plaid, autechre or boards of
canada peel sessions?

or the nirvana, pj harvey, jeff mills, dj shadow, jimi
hendrix, squarepusher etc. etc. etc. peel sessions? some of
them must have filtered over the the US surely?

He is fantastic, he's be even better if he didn't play so
much cheesey, banal techno.

If you like eclectic radioshows, try Mixing It.

good show that, its much more eclectic than peel.
presenters haven't got peel's godlike qualities
unfortunately.

he's my hero - i love you john wherever you are! :)

responsible for getting me into the acid house scene, i used
to record his show on a regular basis then copy tracks i
liked onto another tape. eclectic is the best word to
describe his taste but as he once said if you liked
everything he played you'd be him! ;)
