I've only recently started doing this (swapping one for one with a mate who's got a PC) but I don't feel bad about it at all...in order of justification...
1. CDs are faaar too expensive... 2. I've bought over 600 in my life, why should I feel guilty about topping up my collection with a few more here and there?
3. War, death, famine etc. 4. Everyone else does it, is it any worse than making a tape copy in previous years?

I don't feel bad about burning CDs in these circumstances:
1. The music is from a legitimate source, such as emusic or Irdial.
2. The music is impossible to buy legitimately, such as with deleted stuff and rarities.
3. If I have 100% intention of buying the music when it's available, such as with the recent leak of the Radiohead's new album.

yes it is immoral and wrong, but that is simply in the human nature. now: i have one cd-r left, and the following albums (in mp3 form) to choose from:
chris clark - clarence park richard devine - aleamapper american mcgee's alice, original score arovane - tides company flow - funcrusher plus massive attack - 100th window
i havent properly listened to any of these. which is most worthy of getting burned to my last cd-r? i will be listening to it this week.

The fact that everyone else seems to do it, doesn't justify that it is right. It is still an infringement of the copyright laws. Whether it is immoral is down to the individual's beliefs.....but it is wrong nevertheless.

why choosing, cd-r's costs about 1 euro!
Burning cd's may be wrong, the fact that the music is so easy to get won't stop people from doing this. On the other hand, a real fan will eventually buy the album as well. It is not true that every album i have downloaded, i would have bought if it wasn't available on the net.

I have no worries about burning CDs by major labels. I prefer not to copy stuff released on (proper) independent labels.
Record companies whine when people start copying their music. Perhaps if they didn't charge such rediculous prices, we wouldn't need to burn them.
Besides, major record companies claim their in crisis because of piracy, FUCK THEM, perhaps if they wern't such money grabbing little shits they would have built better long-term plans in terms of the people they sign to their label instead of always looking for a fast buck.
rant over.

Ooooh I've started a debate!
Jedi, morals are your own values, but IMO there's also a clear argument for a moral law separate from those made by governments...take marijuana for example, is it "right" to smoke it in coffee shops in Amsterdam and "wrong" in London or Berlin where the government says you're not allowed to? Was it "right" to smoke it before the 1920s (when it was classified illegal) and suddenly "wrong" when the law was passed...? Just think about it logically... :-)

Same here.
There's no doubt about it, I've got hundreds of albums that I haven't paid for, and most of them, I never will. Not economically feasible to buy all of these... certainly not yet. But money is not an object in keeping me from listening to stuff.
And if it's REALLY good, I buy it. It truly has to be spectacular for me to buy it now though. I have all of Ovuca's stuff, but I'm never paying a cent for that. Because there's more important music for me to waste my cash on, like all Amon Tobin's. Too many artists ahead of him that my money will go to, so tough break for Ovuca. Maybe in 2030 when I'm loaded.
Or... laying dead in a ditch...

i really think they should bring back nailing people to crosses. we could have something like the major record company inquisition which would go after all the evil music-thieving bastards and subject them to immense physical torture until they would admit to their devilish deeds of downloading J.Lo MP3s from soulseek, upon which they would promptly be nailed to a cross and left to rot.

I sense sarcasm within that post... but seriously, you really can't come up with any arguement for downloading music to make it right... well, if you download a cd before it comes out, and then buys it I guess that would be ok... but downloading music, and paying nothing for it, is stealing... there are no if's and's or but's about it... I download music, and I don't try and convince myself I ain't stealing, cause I am... but right now in society it's generally considered by the population to be an ok thing to do, as most people do it...

downloading music is simply socially-acceptable form of theft (not that the majors would agree, mind). i try to only download the sort of things i can't get my hands on at any of the record stores in my city - things which would i would have to special-order and pay ridiculously high and unreasonable prices for. if it weren't for soulseek, i would only know of lusine icl through hearsay, because no way in hell would i be able to find any of it even in toronto, really (montreal, maybe, but that's too far away!). and how about all those rare hard-to-find 12" remixes by _____________ (insert favourite electronic act here)? again, if it wasn't for p2p filesharing networks ...

the only way i will burn a cd with no intention of buying it is if:
1) it some rare limited edition import thing that would cost $30+ (which i HAVE purchased before, and its a let-down)
2) if i want to preview it a few times before i decide whether or not i like it and want to buy it
3) if it is rare and completely unavailable and/or never released
other than that i just download stuff and then decide if i like it enough to buy it.
