Ok, so this movie is considered so great... won loads of
academy awards, and all that... I just watched it, and I
thought it kinda sucked... it was pretty boring except for
the russion roulette scenes which were totally intense!! But
other then that it was dragged out, and maybe I'm a little
slow, but I found it hard to follow... there didn't seem to
be much continuity to it... I couldn't make much sense out
of it... anyways, I heard good things, and watched it... and
it ain't that great! And I don't really see why Christopher
Walken deserved an award for his performance... it wasn't
anything special...

i disagree, i've watched this movie lots of times, and it is
a classic in my eyes... very depressing tho...

i wasn't impressed with it either but a lot of people love
it for its aura. i don't think it sucks, it just
didn't strike a chord with me like it does others. i got a
"war is hell" vibe off it for sure but it's not as harrowing
as some other war films i've seen. i'll watch it again in a
few years and love it i'm sure.

i saw this movie about 10 times...dont know why really,
could be because of a nice surroundings...i think its a bit
overrated, acting was pretty cool tho (not just walken)

Good, I'm glad I'm not the only one. I love Robert De Niro,
I love Christopher Walken, I just didn't love this movie.

I like this movie very much.
Especially the long weding scenes wich i think feels very
authentic , they really look drunk , good acting.
The whole movie feels authentic even if the russian roulete
scenes are a made up metaphore to describe the hell that is
war ( alot of vets complained about those scenes and said it
never took place in the vietnam war).
The confused ending is good too when they sing together in
their grief , they don't know what else to do , they are
just tools incapable of admiting that the goverment might
have done wrong sending troops to vietnam .

that's another thing, the wedding thing... here I was
thinking this was a war movie, and an hour goes by before
they even get to the war... and there ain't much war
footage... I thought the wedding scene was dragged out too
much... I really don't have much good to say... De Niro WAS
good though, I have to admit that...

its an excellent film, up there with the best. a good film
can really drag you in and become all absorbing and this one
certainly does that. and of course there's the theme song...
:)

it may be a little overrated... but, i think it has great
acting and a realistic feel throughout. the pace is a bit
slow, but, if you're in the right mood the pace gives it an
intimate feel that lets you identify with the characters
really well.

certainly not for everyone... but, i recomend you watch it
again, possibly on a boring rainy day... maybe it'll hit
home next time.

I agree with funkmaster.....I had to watch this movie to
write a school report on a few years back. I disliked
it....boring.....except for the war scenes.

that russian rulette scenes were not necessary imo-it just
doesnt click with the rest of the film

heh, well take those out and it's utter crap imo... those
were the only exciting and intense scenes in the whole movie
for me...

they could make another movie about that shit...i also didnt
like the war scenes (actually i have both versions-one with
war scenes and one without)

well, I do agree that they didn't seem to fit well... but
not much did in my mind... I couldn't make much sense out of
it... but I found the war scenes most enjoyable, even if
they did seem out of place... well, the russian roulette
scenes I mean...

offline tolstoyed from the ocean on 2003-05-05 11:25 [#00684899]

they could make one version for you and one version for me
out of that flick...
nice love story for me and killing , slaughter russian
rulette for you :)

hehe, yes lots of killing and blood for me!!!! :)

But seriously, I enjoyed those scenes most, cause they were
the most powerful scenes in my opinion... they were fucking
tense... I was on the edge of my seat so to speak... whereas
the rest of the movie I found to be pretty dull...

offline tolstoyed from the ocean on 2003-05-05 11:32 [#00684921]
Points: 50073 Status: Moderator

i agree they were the most tense ones (i remember the first
time, i couldnt watch those rulette scenes...)

the part i liked the best was that deer hunt-where deniro
lets that deer alive...but this was more because of
beautiful surroundings i guess

offline The_Funkmaster from St. John's (Canada) on 2003-05-05 11:35 [#00684924]

yeah, that part was cool too... you really see how the war
affect his feelings about killing and stuff... I will admit
that AFTER the war scenes, I enjoyed it more... I don't
know, things seemed to make a bit more sense to me... like
that scene in particular that you mentioned, and that also
helped me understand some other things about the movie, like
some of the previous hunting scenes, etc... but still, I
found it pretty boring...

offline tolstoyed from the ocean on 2003-05-05 11:42 [#00684939]
Points: 50073 Status: Moderator

well, i watched it for at least 10 times so its not all that
boring for me, but yeah, they could do a much better
film...i think its biggest problem is that producers wanted
it to be a financial success, and to achieve this they
needed to include those scenes (there's nothing wrong with
war movies btw, i enjoyed platoon for instance), but it
would make a much better film if those scenes were only
mentioned or if they would've been brief...but hey, im not a
movie maker so what do i know hehe

the long setups are to familiarize you with the characters
and their relationships in the small poor community. Its a
movie about the effect war has on the lives of normal
working class people. They come from a steel working town
and they already have problems of their own. poverty and
alcoholism are already weighing heavily on these people and
now they are thrust into a war because they can't afford to
avoid it.
This movie is about loyalty to family and friends. War is
just a catylist in this movie.

i loved that film!! Thin Red Line is sooo under rated... its
one of my fave "war" films, along with "apocalypse now" and
"the pianist"

yeah
its great. i don't think it's necessarily under rated
though. a lot of people don't like it but it got plenty of
praise outside the mainstream.

Incidently, another of Terrence Malick's films,
Badlands, is also very good. Natural Born
Killers
was certainly heavily influenced by this film.

wow seems like an even split..=0)..maybe ? on those who
really like it and those that don't.....movies (like music)
are berry berry subjective......ehehhe

anyway my take, i thought it was a classic and cried my eyes
out when i first saw it. i was able to see it on the big
screen tho, during an oscar revival showing......and
perhaps? that made a difference since it is a lengthy
movie.

i loved it's depiction of life in that rural PA town, very
realistic. and i think one reason they spent so much time on
the wedding, etc... is so we could get close and somehow
emotionally involved with the characters. so later on down
the road everything that happened to them, happened to
people we knew. the whole thing worked for me.....cos it was
totally enthralled.

again something is to be said of watching these lengthy
movies in a theatre where you're more likely to focus on the
movie and nothing else. that rarely happens at home. =0)

anyway it's a GOOD discussion, and for those that love
movies i like reading both the good and bad stuff about
movies!!! even if i disagree....=b
